Gooners scored another 6-0 game. When can we see LFC score more than 2 goals in a game?

    GERRARD AND TORRES RESTED

Liverpool will face Steaua Bucharest at Anfield on Thursday without both Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, according to the Daily Mirror. To be fair, the way that Torres played against Birmingham, we might not notice either way. Both will apparently be saved for Sunday's clash with Manchester United.

The Mirror claims Hodgson will give new signing Raul Meireles his full Liverpool debut against the Romanians in the Europa League opener while Joe Cole should also return from suspension to play. Paul Konchesky will shake off his hamstring injury to start at left-back.

    Liverpool 4 - 1 Steaua Bucuresti

Midfielder Joe Cole scored the quickest European goal in Liverpool's illustrious history to set his under-strength side up for a 4-1 victory over Steaua Bucharest at Anfield.

The England international took just 25 seconds of their opening Europa League Group K match to find the net for his first strike since joining on a free transfer from Chelsea in the summer.

Cristian Tanase equalised for the Romanians in the 13th minute but David Ngog took his tally to five in as many games in this competition and substitute Lucas Leiva scored the other for a victory which was not as easy as the scoreline suggested.

Manager Roy Hodgson risked criticism with his team selection, which had just three survivors from the weekend's goalless draw at Birmingham with neither Fernando Torres nor Steven Gerrard in the squad.

The Reds boss' decision, with a huge game at Manchester United on Sunday, was ultimately justified but for a 30-minute period either side of half-time when the match hung in the balance.

Prior to the game Hodgson had stressed Steaua, the 1986 European Cup winners, would provide a tough test but it took precisely 25 seconds for his words to be disproved.

Octavian Abduran, under pressure from Cole, left his back-pass woefully short and the midfielder nipped in to sidefoot a shot past goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu and in off the far post.

The Romanians were reeling and Sotirios Kyrgiakos had a downward header from Maxi Rodriguez's corner blocked by Eric Bicfalvi and Jay Spearing fired a long-range shot over.

But Liverpool could not press home their advantage and a defensive lapse in the 13th minute allowed Steaua to equalise.

Kyrgiakos and Kelly allowed Tanase to nip in between them to collect Bogdan Stancu's through-ball and he neatly chipped over Reina.

The goal gave the visitors the confidence they needed to start knocking the ball around as Liverpool lost their way.

Cole, released down the middle by Spearing, but with no-one in support, had to shoot from distance and that - and subsequent efforts from range from Ryan Babel and Rodriguez - failed to trouble the goalkeeper sufficiently.

It was a sign of the way things were going that when Spearing implored his team-mates to ''pick it up'' the call was heard all around a half-full Anfield, who responded with an encouraging round of applause.

Abduran's foul on Rodriguez earned him a booking and Liverpool a 25-yard free-kick just before the interval but Paul Konchesky shot well wide.

Cole was Liverpool's most inventive player, although he did not have much competition in that department, and his good work in holding the ball up early in the second half allowed Rodriguez to fire in a shot straight at Tatarusanu.

They were gifted the chance to go ahead in the 55th minute when Pantelis Kapetanos pulled back Kyrgiakos as he challenged for Rodriguez's corner.

When Ngog stepped up to take the spot-kick - the last one at Anfield was missed by Cole against Trabzonspor - there was an audible groan.

However, the young French striker shrugged off the concerns of the Kop to expertly dispatch the ball into the left-hand corner before wheeling away with a celebration which may have included a gesture towards his doubters.

It was the 21-year-old's fifth goal of the season and fourth in five European games so far.

Raul Meireles almost marked his first start since arriving from Porto last month with a goal as his 30-yard volley was kept out by Tatarusanu's low dive to his right.

Hodgson made his first change of the night when he sent Lucas Leiva on for Babel, moving Cole out to the left and pushing Meireles further forward.

The substitute has an instant impact as he picked up a weak clearance 20 yards out to drive a shot past Tatarusanu with nine minutes to go.

Hodgson was true to his word as he used the latter stages to give experience to youngsters Dani Pacheco and Nathan Eccleston, players who will have an important role to play in this competition.

Ngog fired home his second in injury time to give the scoreline a more convincing appearance.

It was a night when all the manager's decisions proved to be right.

However, making all the right calls at Old Trafford on Sunday will be a much bigger challenge.

    Hodgson happy with weakened Reds

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson felt his decision to field a weakened team was vindicated after his side's 4-1 Europa League victory over Steaua Bucharest.

''I think it is important you make decisions and make them for the right reasons,'' who retained only Jose Reina, Paul Konchesky and Maxi Rodriguez from the goalless draw at Birmingham.

''I had no doubt that, given the fact we have so many players who play international football, this was the moment to give them a rest and allow them to prepare properly for Sunday's game.

''The ones who came in did a good job and got a good result and in my opinion the decision would have been just as valid even if we had not got a good result. They made us work hard to contain them but even in that period Joe showed some good touches.

''I'll start thinking about the weekend come tomorrow. I'll just enjoy the victory tonight.''

Hodgson also had praise for the performances of Ngog and Cole, although he admitted getting a goal from Lucas minutes after putting him on was more by fortune than design.

''I thought Ngog's confidence grew after the penalty but I don't think he looked that confident in the first half,'' added the Reds boss. ''But certainly his confidence grew the longer the game went and we had so much possession in the second half that for forwards it is good when you have that much dominance in the midfield.

''It was nice for Joe Cole to get his first goal for the club, I thought he was lively. We substituted Lucas because we wanted to make certain we shored up the midfield and to give Ryan Babel a rest - the decision was made for defensive rather than offensive reasons, it is just a coincidence Lucas scored a great goal.''

Steaua coach Ilie Dumitrescu felt his side did not deserve their 4-1 defeat but admitted they were architects of their own downfall to some extent.

''We gave a present to Liverpool in the first minute,'' said the former Tottenham and West Ham midfielder. ''In the second half I tried to move things around but I knew it was difficult to get a result here because Liverpool create big pressure.

''Maybe it was a penalty, maybe it was not, but at the end of the day I was very sad for the result because this is not the real picture of what happened on the field.''

Dumitrescu had no arguments with Hodgson's team selection.

''You have Maxi Rodriguez, David Ngog, Ryan Babel, Joe Cole - they are quality players and it is a very strong squad and they look organised,'' he added.

    Correct Score Prediction = 3points!

    Correct 1st Scorer for LFC = 1point!

Hat-Trick Hero Perfect Guess Guess Guess! = 5points!

so in any game, the max point a participant can net is a total of 10points.

    Sorting Out the Grey Areas.

1). in the event of 1-0 end result, the 1st scorer will be taken as the last scorer even though the participant might haf anticipated 2-0 or 22-0 and have listed someone else as the last scorer.

2). the prediction is good till the Final Whistle, which includes Extra-time but not Penalty Shootout.

Tom Hicks aims to refinance debts in an effort to remain in control at Liverpool

    By Paul Kelso
    Published: 11:18PM BST 16 Sep 2010

Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks is attempting to refinance the club’s debts of £237 million with Royal Bank of Scotland in an effort to remain in control at Anfield, Telegraph Sport can disclose.

Hicks met with Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton in London on Wednesday and is understood to have told him that raising fresh finance to buy out the RBS debt is one of a number of options he is considering ahead of the Oct 6 refinancing deadline set by the bank.

Hicks’s discussions with Broughton took place with co-owner George Gillett in talks with an American lender intended to protect his 50 per cent stake in the club, which could be vulnerable if he fails to renegotiate a $75 million loan secured against the shares in 2008.

Gillett secured the loan from funders Mill Financial in 2008 to help him meet personal guarantees demanded by RBS in a previous round of refinancing, putting up his shares in the club as collateral.

Mill Financial called in the loan this summer and Gillett could technically be in default if he takes no action in the short-term, but sources with knowledge of the situation said on Thursday night that he was in talks to extend the loan and remains in control of his shares. He is also understood to be working closely with Hicks on the refinancing options that would allow them both to remain in control.

While Hicks is not thought to have met with RBS during his UK visit the bank is considering extending its financing to the American’s in order to provide Broughton with more time to secure a buyer for the club.

Bank sources have told Telegraph Sport that taking control at Anfield is their least-favoured option, and that they will consider extending the current financing arrangement if required.

Were Hicks to be successful in raising the money to buy out RBS, Broughton and his colleagues on the club board would have to decide whether to attempt to block the deal.

Broughton, managing director Christian Purslow and commercial director Ian Ayre blocked the American’s last attempt to refinance in June. They did so only having taken legal advice from Slaughter & May that they were able to do so.

Company law requires directors to act in the best interests of the shareholders - in this case Hicks and Gillett - but in some circumstances they can over-ride those concerns if it is deemed to be in the company’s interests.

If Hicks returns with a refinancing deal before Oct 6 they will face the same choice. Broughton is understood to have told Hicks on Wednesday that the board remain open-minded and will listen to any proposal he places before it.

Broughton, who was appointed in April as a condition of RBS extending the financing to the Americans for six months, has made it clear that he considers the sale of the club to an owner who removes the club’s debt and allows investment in a new stadium to be the best deal for Liverpool’s future.

The absence of any buyers willing to meet Hicks’ and Gillett’s valuation has placed RBS in a deeply uncomfortable position, and despite pressure from supporters there appears to be little appetite within the bank to force the American’s into default.

While RBS has moved the loans to its “bad bank”, the global restructuring group, Hicks has consistently maintained that Liverpool is a growing and increasingly profitable company rather than a distressed asset.

His pursuit of a potential refinancing deal indicates his determination to remain involved and recognise value from the club.
