    Default Car Rental Tips

Hi everyone.. I know there have been many threads asking about car rental recommendations etc. But this thread is not about that.

I plan to rent a car for 1 or 2 days sometime this mth and drive gf and family around (watch sunrise, eat dinner etc). This will be my first time renting and i would like to ask the lao jiaos or those who have rented cars before what do they look out for when they collect the car.

Specifically do you check the car from top to bottom, inside out? Is there a checklist for this? Any other tips and stuff to lookout for are also welcome. Do share your horror stories too.

If you have any recommendations for a good (subjective) rental company, you can PM me directly. =) Thanks to all who share their tips and experiences.

*If I've posted this in the wrong section, can mod pls help me move? Thanks alot.

seems like you could use some help...will share you some tips based on my personal experience.

easier to check exterior before moving on to interior. check the general appearance of the body - if got dents/scratches inform the staff. he will note it in the rental contract form.

check tyres to see if they are not too worn.

check front and rear headlights, in particular their plastic casings... for cracks and chipped/broken portions. these things usually cost more than the bulbs themselves and might come back to you if your rental insurance does not cover these items.

check that the exhaust pipe is not loose...once rented an old picnic whose exhaust had actually come off the bracket! luckily they secured it back for me on the same day.

you might wanna check what's under the bonnet, but if you're just driving in spore and the car breaks down, just call the company to rectify the situation and they should give you another car or your money back.

interior - check seats' upholstery. check aircon, check dashboard lights, left-right signals, brakelights. maybe check if the wipers work and the blades are in good condition.

check both front and rear windscreens for any visible cracks. and check if your insurance covers them. you never know if you're driving behind a concrete mixer and a stone flies into your windscreen! happened to me once when i rented a car in portugal many years ago. what started as a 2cm crack became a 30cm crack by the time my rental period was up. the basic insurance didnt cover them, luckily i had signed up for a more comprehensive coverage. otherwise it could have cost me a fortune.

not too sure if i've left anything out, maybe others can chime in too. once you get the car, relax and drive safe!

check ALL scratches, be it fine or major scratches.

my first time renting a car (from one agency at bedok reservoir), i pointed out several fine scratches on the rear bumper but the guy said "fine scratches never mind".

when i returned the car, the agent did a check and noted "ALL OK". that night, i was sent an invoice stating "replacement of rear bumper" and pictures of the rear bumper with the fine scratches circled out, and the agent asked that i settle payment (including rental for the 3 days the car will be in the workshop) asap. he even said "we're not charging you anything for bringing the car to the workshop. you're only paying for the cost of the bumper"

best of all. there were 3 minor dents on the same rear bumper. when i probed deeper, the agent actually told me that the previous person who rented the vehicle had paid for the cost of replacing the bumper, just that the rental company had not found the time to send the car for servicing. totally WTF.

Have you considered using car sharing scheme ? Its more for the long run. I think I rather deal with the larger companies than those small outfit rental company.

Ya, why not sign up for a car sharing scheme. I don't drive very often so this car sharing plan suits me quite well. However if you plan to drive regularly during weekends, you might as well get an Off Peak car instead.

You can book a car of your choice online anytime, anywhere, for a duration from just 1 hour to a few days. And if you're lucky, a fleet of cars could parked near your neighborhood carpark. Collecting of car is less hassle here, but do check carefully before you drive.

Check carclub.com.sg (formerly NTUC Carcoop) for registration, annual & car rental fees. Drive carefully, always give way & be considerate to other road users.

I used to rent from this company

    http://www.dts.com.sg/home/

All the cars are very new but the prices is abit steep.

It's conveniently located downtown and nearby MRT station.
No worries about having problem finding way back home after returning car.

motor Z. One question keeps bugging me. What if I've made a reservation for a specific model on this day in advance, but come collection day, car is unavaliable, then how? I change car or rental company gotta make the arrangements for me?

Today's situation was that i was supposed to collect a Honda Fit. But last min 1 guy from the company called and said that the Fit was stuck in Malaysia and hirer extended the car. Then he said that might have a Matrix provided it is not extended. So i waited from 1pm+ till 5.30pm, but no joy. Hirer was uncontactable, so no Matrix for me. Ended up, LL take public transport.

Screwed up my mood and entire day's worth of plans. Thus even though i made advance booking, ended up no car. Lucky still got honey. This also begs the question.. Should i make reservations with a few companies to hedge my bets? Then come collection day pick up car from 1 company and fly the rest aeroplane. I know its not ethical. But who cares why i get my car.
