Default mid-roll changing for the F5

Hello fellow Nikon beings,

Anyone has any good idea how to change film at mid-roll for the F5?

Situation is out on the field, need to change color into B&W roll or high speed film to low speed film.

Please help.

Thanks.

F5 can be programmed to leave the film lead out after rewind. Get it re-programmed. Just rewind anytime and change rolls. Oh u will have to remember the last count of the re-wound roll and mark it on the cartridge with a marker. I normally include the date too. This helps u to see easily which are the re-wound rolls and where u last stopped. U need to be disciplined in your work flow as u can easily mess up. Worse thing is not remembering which count did u stopped at.

Actually any SLR camera can do mid roll change film. Just rewind, take a film picker to get out the lead, then put in cartridge and label the last count and you need to know how to go to the last count when you use back that roll of film next time.

My way is set the lens to MF, cover the lens with front cap, then set the mode to M mode and set a high shutter speed. If you have eyepiece shutter then shut it too. Then you just press the shutter button till the number is your last count number or the one after it to have some allowance so the photo will not overlap.

To reprogram you need to go to Nikon singapore.

Thanks justarius, but is there a much easier way? say... by using the custom setting of the camera itself?

Nope, no easier way. I don't see any film leader out option in the F5 custom settings guide.

Hi engineeringmunn,

just my 2 cents here but doesn't the F5 have manual rewind option? For the older cameras we just cranked until we felt the film the tension release - the film leader would still be out of the cassette when the back was opened...

don't get what you all are saying... do u all mean that u all sort of continue using the film from where u left off after doing mid roll rewinding??? can it really be done?

if so, can elaborate more clearly? might save me some money if the quality is still there...

yes it's exactly what it sounds like, rewind in the middle of a roll, change to a different film (higher ISO, slide, B&W, etc). tantingchin has explained it quite well. To resuse the other half of the roll, just reload it it, fire off the number of shots it previously was at +1 or +2 so as not to overlap, and continue shooting.

And why wouldn't the quality be there? It's still the same roll of film ain't it? Just make sure your lens cap is on and cover the view finder when advancing the film to where you left off.

look at here.

Cover the viewfinder and lens cap so that no light goes in and expose the film.

You need to make sure no light goes in your camera and just shoot.

The "thing" is called film picker, you can get it for about $15-$18.

letz say u have a roll of film that u had already expozed some framez in it ....

now u wanna continue uzing it frm where u stop lazt time ..... thiz iz wat u do .....

1) load in the film

2) put ON the lenz cap

3) switch to manual focuz

4) switch to M mode

5) switch to the faztezt shutter speed & smallezt aperture

6) prezz the shutter releaze until the frame u want
eg. if the lazt frame me expozed in the roll of film waz, letz say, 10, me will prezz the shutter releaze until the frame counter showz 11

thiz will prevent the new expozure frm overlapping with the lazt expozure u took lazt time

the tool to pull out the film leader iz called a film picker .....

Ruby iz selling it ..... $10++ .....

OK... thanks for all the help.

Let me get this straight here, and pls correct me if I'm wrong.

3 Options available so far:

1. Go to Nikon Singapore and let them do the setting.

2. Take note of the last frame. Manual rewind until you feel the tension (??). Thought it'll lose tension when it's at the end of the roll? Anyway, there should be the lead out, right? When needed, use MF mode, cover lens and viewfinder, then fire until last frame+1 so as not to overlap.

3. Take note of the last frame. Rewind all the way. When need to be used again, use film picker to take out the lead. Load the film, then use MF mode, cover lens and viewfinder, then fire until last frame+1 so as not to overlap.

Looks like the film picker will be a standard issue in my accessory pouch together with cleaning kit! Oh yes.. ink marker to note the last frame too!
