They might as well sell the tickets by the match

I'm really very disappointed by the arrangements.

    Gymnastics - sold out
    Swimming - sold out

Then I see lots of empty seats on TV.

I believe if the tickets were sold more freely and not horded, and the Garmen made a sincere appeal 2 wks before the event for ticket purchase if tickets were left unsold (sort of like those charity events on TV, where they plead and psycho ), S'poreans would rally and support the events.
But their high handed method of wanting control has backfired big time.

so if a 2000-seater (agar agar) stadium is supposedly sold out, but on that day, only 1/4 is filled. the organiser then continues to sell tickets (1500 tickets at $10ea) at the door to the public.

doesn't this sum up to an extra $15000 in revenue?

It is inevitable that MOE purchased the bulk tickets coz its trying to promote sports to the YOUTH ie. the target market. Makes sense there, right? Not trying to stand up for govt but reading comments by students who seriously are an apathetic bunch of spoilt brats and know nothing but to complain when things do not go their way, you can say its a 2-way thing. MOE resorted to such nonsensical methods of punishment coz they might have known better the current generation's mindset.

Nonetheless, I do agree that this method has deprived the real fans of such sporting events. I'm a civil servant myself and I'm surprised there has been absolutely lack of support for YOG, despite the posters at the govt buildings, among other agencies besides MCYS. Not saying that priority should be given to sell tickets to the public svc ppl but at the very least, make some leeway for us to take time-off from work to support such a prestigious event (if we can even get the tickets, that is). So, the "govt" that you are all attacking, is actually just one ministry btw. Heh. Sian.

Oh btw, I do have a huge complaint-in-the-making about the YOG. But I shall reserve it when the time comes, lest I'm proven wrong. Hahaha.

I think there shouldn't even be a need for the government to buy up the tickets. There are many people who support the YOG despite complaining about this and that, and they would buy the tickets. Youths these days are very cynical, so when they see the government buying tickets for them, they do not appreciate it, and question the government's motive and coming to the conclusion that the YOG is a failure and that is why they are desperate and buy tickets for students. In fact, I think more students would turn up if no tickets were bought and issued by MOE.

So sad the youth women's platform divings final only half filled, that is 100 percents for the spectator's seat but the other half for VIP and guest and Host news only 1/3 filled. If they release the seat, at least some revenue return.

Therein lies the problem right? We want our young to be self-reliant, creative, and not a bunch of toy robots. We spend so much money on creating self-development programmes, etc etc, but now we are spoon feeding our young yet again aren't we?

The target audience should be the Youth, right? Adults aren't going to be interested because essentially it's perceived to be kids games. Since it's a once-in-a-lifetime events, the MOE should've taken the bold initiative to declare partial school holidays for the entire duration of the games so that the schools can bring ALL the kids to go watch. (I say "partial holidays" because if it were full holidays, parents will bring their kids away for holiday tours).

Right now, only a select group of students and their teachers are arrowed to go watch certain games, while the rest of the school community remains apathetic to what's going on. So much talk about YOG during school assembly for what? Now is also smack RIGHT in the middle of exam period, who got mood to go also?

If you don't get the youth en masse to support the games, who do you really expect would be filling up the seats? I feel that the idea of the YOG is fantastic because it really gives hopes and aspirtations for the younger generation. But because the authorities aren't willing to break with tradition with regards to the school term, we have missed a really, really big opportunity to give our kids something special that they could enjoy.

To me, this is an indication of only one thing, that at the end of the day, studies still matter the most, and all this YOG is just there for us to hao-lian to the world.

    leaving the seats empty
One issue is that these students and teachers still have classes to attend, or they have been arrowed to burn their weekend to watch, and since now is exam season, you can't blame them for not wanting to stay longer.

What more, YOG organisation is very bad. In some cases, they just tell the school to go to a certain venue "between 9-5" without giving any games fixtures. How would they know what time to come, and how long they should stay?

Certainly asking the young kids to do their part was a miscalculation.
At least if they got NSF to go and OC/CSM give 1 day off as reward, all the NSF will turn up

At the end of the day, it is still a case of "people unable to buy tickets bcoz it is sold out" and "people with free tickets complain that they are forced to watch the show.. for FREE"......

The privileged few who were given free tickets just cannot appreciate the kindness extended to them given that there are others who were deprived of the luxury to watch even if they're willing to pay.. How sad can it be.. Even if they are not interested, can just take it as supporting a national event.. it is not as if they need to pay or what.. why so difficult to just go and watch a show..
