Thread: At my wit's end.

    Default At my wit's end.

I was cleaning my D5000 body as usual.
Been doing this at least twice a month since february this year without any problems.

While using the blower, my friend accidentally pushed me and the blower tip made contact with the pentamirror thus scratching it, not the diagonal mirror. (I'm not sure of the term)

    It's the mirror/glass where it's facing downwards.

What should I do? When I look through the viewfinder, my heart just sink. It was spotless before and now it's filled with smudges and scratched.

Will it cost a bomb to replace? Thanks in advance.

Did you try taking a pic and see if there are smudges there? If there are none then it's probably just the focusing screen. I'm not an expert with these stuff but I THINK that usually the sensor is not exposed unless you select the "lock mirror for cleaning" or something like that.

Then again, I don't know about these things, so best thing is to wait for more people to clarify...

If it is the frosted piece of glass above the diagonal mirror, it is called a "focusing screen". It is not that expensive and easily changed. You can even buy a 3rd party one and change it yourself if you do manual focus.

If it is scratched or dirty, it doesn't affect the pictures captured anyway. So it is also up to you if you want to get that screen changed.

BTW if you want to remove the screen, here are the instructions with pictures:

If you only screwed up your focusing screen, I think it costs around 26 bucks to replace one @NSC. Don't worry, won't cost a bomb.

Thanks for the heads up everyone. I took some pictures and none got affected. It's the focusing screen that got scratched. Relieve to know it doesn't cost a bomb to replace.

I think I'll live with it for now. Thanks again everyone.
