Thread: Wide Angel Lens

    Default Wide Angel Lens

    Hi all,
Need some advise. Thanks in advance.
Was wondering how lens are classified as Wide Angel or not.

Kinda confusing to me. How is it classified?
Was actually looking for Landscape lens..

    Some people said that>>
    18-55mm is wide angel lens.
    18-105mm is wide angel lens.
10-20mm is also wide angel lens.
10-24mm is also wide angel lens.

Any recommendation from all the Snr in here for Landscape lens?

20mm is considered wide. The lower the wider... so 10mm would be very wide.

18 - 108 is a general zoom lens.... 18mm would be considered quite wide.. but i would clasiffy it as a general lens rather than just a wide angle lens.

Wide angle lens would be the other two you mentioned.. 10 - 20, 10 -24.. best is for you to go and try it out then maybe you will understand

anyway, its wide ANGLE.. not wide angel.. most angels are quite thin and nice figure one i think..

dont be confused in wide angle lens and wide angle focal length.. wide angle lens are those dedicated to taking only wide angle shots.. as you have mentioned, 10-20 or the 10-24... or prime lens such as 14mm, 20mm, 24mm etc...

the others like 18-55, 18-105, 17-55 are zoom lens that have focal lengths starting from a wide angle to a tele angle... so when you shoot using a zoom lens and at 17 or 18mm you are using the widest focal length of that lens.. dont mix up..

looking for landscape lens you can go do some research on what you want, then when you have a few options then seniors can give their input, you like that ask like just plucking things out of nowhere..

Prob not the best person to comment.

Wide angle can cover quite a bit of range. Personally 24mm and below considered wide.

Ultra wide angle lens would be something like 12-24, 10-20.

Zoom lens sometimes also cover a wide angle from 18-250mm. Such are general lens where people don't want to carry too many lens.

All lens can be used for landscape shooting. Normally the ultra wides are their favorites. Plus the filters heh

To add on, one also need to take into account the crop factor of the camera.

A 12mm on a Nikon DX or Canon APS-C is equivalent to a 18mm or 19mm respectively for 35mm equivalent. I would consider this ultra wide. Thus, a 18mm on Nikon DX would be 27mm on 35mm equivalent, which I consider is a normal zoom. On the other hand 18mm on Nikon FX or Canon full frame, would 18mm equivalent on 35mm. So don't confuse between full frame and cropped factor lens and on which cameras they are used.

Google or use search function to understand the other terms you don't understand.

For (35mm) FF equivalent, in my personal opinion, anything below 40mm is considered wide angle. 40-60mm = standard/normal range. Anything above 60mm is telephoto.

    For cropped APS-C only...
10-16 range is not considered just a wide angle. it is considered Ultra wide angle (UWA). So lenses like 10-24, 10-22, is called UWA zooms.
18-55 is considered wide to short tele zoom (some people just say standard zoom, since it covers around standard/normal view in the middle)
18-105 is considered wide to mid tele zoom (some people also call this standard zoom, since it covers standard/normal view)
    35mm is a standard/normal lens.
    50mm is short tele lens.
    85mm is mid tele lens
    135mm is tele lens
200mm and above long tele lens.
And any lens that let you change focal lens is called a zoom.
And any lens that is ultra wide and bends horizons and lines is called Fisheye.

    For FF,
14-24 range is not considered just a wide angle. it is considered Ultra wide angle (UWA). So lenses like 14-24, 16-35, 17-35, 17-40 are called UWA zooms
24-70 is considered wide to short tele zoom (some people just say standard zoom, since it covers around standard/normal view in the middle)
24-120 is considered wide to mid tele zoom (some people also call this standard zoom, since it covers standard/normal view)
    50mm is a standard/normal lens.
    85mm is short tele lens.
    135mm is mid tele lens
    200mm is tele lens
300mm and above long tele lens.
And any lens that let you change focal lens is called a zoom.
And any lens that is ultra wide and bends horizons and lines is called Fisheye.

You have to remember that many different people call different things differently. So take note.

yes too wide you will get distortions at the edges and corners.. and also if its too wide then sometimes you compose a shot will have alot of distractions inside the shot..

sometimes will accidently catch the leg inside the photo.. (your own leg or tripod leg) =)

Yup... and for the 12-24 lens, although it is an excellent lens, it's construction make attaching filters near impossible...

Unless you wait for the Lee holder custom manufactured for this lens. And yes, it will cost you a BOMB. I think the filter holder itself will cost 300-400+. And the filters will be custom sized too, 150mm, and I am very sure it will be hella expensive too... 200+ a piece?

If a photographer is faced with these issues, he should seek to improve his skills in handling wide angles instead of blaming the lens.

That means, in the market, there is no filter for 12-24mm lens yet?
And it sound rather expensive ><

Can i can say that irregardless of what lens you use....
Nvr shoot at the lower or the highest angle, to prevent distortion??

    For a 18-105mm>> Nvr shoot at 18 & 105mm
    For a 12-24mm>> Nvr shoot at 12 & 24mm

No lens which is perfect, that it does not have distortion?
