Thread: 550D Kit II or 500D Kit II or The body + lens of my choice??

Red face 550D Kit II or 500D Kit II or The body + lens of my choice??

Its my first time buying DSLR and I'm having a hard time deciding what to buy. I was getting the 500D, when Samuel at John 3:16 suggest to get the 550D. Then came the suggestion by Alan at TK foto to get the kit II lens as 18-55mm might be too short. Or shall i simply get the body and a lens of my choice as suggested in some 550D threads?? I'm more into taking pictures of people and landscape. Please help me out. Thanks

    550D kit II-around $1580, 15-135mm
    500D kit II-around $1650, 15-200m

    What's kit II lens?

Which to get also depends on your budget. Kinda difficult to advise not knowing your constraints.

i just updated it... hope it helps. i was really thinking of getting the kit II for 550D but i read that some buyers of the 550D II are having problems with the IQ or is it QI of the lens. what does that mean actually?

    IQ stands for image quality..

but first of all you need to ask urself what is it you want from your photos... is it for professional use? if not, then how much money are you willing to spend on ur "hobby"...

both the 550 and 500 are great cameras.. heck i know some frens who are still using 450D.. so its really not as big deal as everyone thinks.. unless you are really like wedding/event photographer..

even then, do you want to spend more $ on body or on lens?

if you are keen to get a starter kit, just get the 550D with kit lens.. if you are keen to get better lens in the future, maybe the 500D body by itself.. now BnS section quite common.. then use the spare cash to get a good lens.. one that can take nice landscapes and portraits.. (in actual fact its more like everyday use lens)

if you have the budget and cash to spare, and know you are going to stick with this hobby or go into freelancing, then jump straight to the 550D and get a good lens.. such as the 17-55 f 2.8 then stay there and don't waste money here and there for upgrades etc..

If you do not know what to buy for a DSLR system, chances are that you will not know the difference between Kit I or Kit II. Buy the cheapest kit, master the system, and upgrade the kit lens later. All experienced DSLR users will only buy the body and choose the specific lenses they need to go with it for many different reasons.

I myself dun know what the hell is DSLR at first, but I try out the cheapest DSLR 1000D with EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS.. learn the basic of DSLR.. and upgrade my skill, now I just upgrade the lens to 24-105mm f4L IS USM. My next upgrade is my body to 7D OR 5DMKII.

550D is good. go for it..

alright... so judging by the body alone... 500D or 550D will be better? im concerned with the 6400iso that 550D has. will the noise level be high? someone mentioned that at 18.1mp, the noise level will be obvious. im not exactly that concerned with the hd video recording...

honestly what are you worried about man, the 550D rocks in terms of ISO.. and besides that, you won't even be using so high lor.. what do expect to be using iso 6400 for??

usually people stay at 800 or 1600... really need then 3200..

for everyday shooting, you really don't want to push ur photos all to 6400 iso...

for body, 550D will be better, cos for 500D usually iso push to 1600.. won't use 3200...

so you ownself decide ba, whether you need to have that 6400 iso..

IMO, I would rather purchase the kit I or body only and spare some money to buy other lenses from BnS. There are many good lens around such as tamron 17-50, etc.

As for iso, it depends on what u shoot. As mentioned u like landscape? Landscape dun need high iso. Either 100-400 or u will be using a tripod. If u intent to upgrade later on, dun get such expensive de. like what bro Aliva did. Hands on the cheaper model and upgrade later on.

dont buy the kit lens.. u will regret in long term use..

buy the body alone be it 500D or 550D

    and get a

    Tamron 17-50 2.8
    Sigma 17-50 2.8
    Tokina 16-50 2.8

long zoom like 18-135 is like 3.5-5.6 ... u will lose out in low light conditions..

long zoom dont usually have good IQ compared to primes lens...

2.8 is how big the aperture is.. its 17-50 is a constant 2.8 ! compared to 18-55 or 18-135 which is 3.5 -5.6..

trust me, get a better aperture lens.. u can use the tamron 17-50 with your 500D or 550D for at least 3-4 years or longer..

tamron 17-55 doesn't have IS. isn't it tricky to use? or is IS overstated?

There is IS version for the 17-50 with a price tag of additional $300.

For me I don't need IS, why? Cos if your shutter speed is enough to freeze the scene , why do u need IS ?

Some prefer IS cos when they talk during outings, they wanna Hao lian.. Saying oh they got IS .. But so what..

Pro shooter who uses 135L lens or 50 1.2L lens all doesn't have IS too..

U will the b n s section a lot of people selling the kit lens after they shoot.. They feel it's difficult under low light..

That's why u see some leica or carlzeiss lenses are very large apertures on their rangefinders and at such they don't need any flash..

I would say as a beginner who just started off, get a 17-50 2.8. Shoot and shoot and tell yourself what you prefer to shoot and from there chose a delicated lens for several catergories of photography.

But if i were to recommend a lens for a beginner I will recommend a 50 1.8 lens .. Why ? Cos it's cheap $130. And holds a $100 paper value for secondhand. Buy a body and with this lens.. Pretty good enough for a walkabout shoot, portraits and low light..

Not only looking at the range, look at the aperture too..
