BARCA BID FOR MASCHERANO - SSN

    Posted 23/08/10 18:33

Barcelona have reportedly made a formal bid for Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano.

The Argentine has confirmed in recent weeks that he would like to leave Anfield after failing to settle in England's north-west and Sky Sports News are reporting that Barca have tabled a £12m offer for his services.

The stations claims that the player has been omitted from the Liverpool squad for tonight's game against Manchester City.

Liverpool are yet to comment on the reports.

this is the reason why marshmallow man wasn't in the team last evening.

12mil GBP, inclusive of another few player coming over, i guess?

Trueness!! Who's criticising RH ha? let me know. I let Red Ants into their house later...

I really hoped the fans or to be precise Kops Hardcore fans do not put too much hope with this team. New manager, new set of trainers... give them time. We've got to be supporting them now...not to be calling for RH's head to roll. Its too premature. Even rafa999 was given chances after chances after chances after chances...

    The team need to gel.

And for Masch... you better go laaa.. Your heart and soul is no longer with the team. no point wearing that Holy Red Jersey.

Well as everyone already knows we were pretty convincingly beaten tonight. The more cynical fan would be starting to look for a scapegoat but I myself felt we were simply outplayed. After looking at the fan’s comments after the match it seems that Lucas is receiving quite some criticism, but lets be honest name a Liverpool player who put in a good performance.

Yes we gave our usual hard working performance but there was not much technical quality shown by any of our players tonight. Also criticism which has come in for Milan Jovanovic is very unjust, not too long ago fans were raving on about his pace and work rate, so one bad game does not totally dismiss his qualities and potential to be a great Liverpool player.

I have been most disgusted by fans who have been blaming Roy Hodgson for the defeat. To start calling for Hodgson’s head this early in the season is shocking. He set up the team absolutely fine in my opinion and although he may have made his substitutes quite late I honestly feel they wouldn’t have made much of a difference to the final score. So if you call yourself a Liverpool fan and are already looking for Roy to be given the boot.

You must realise we are not Chelsea, once the going gets tough we do not drop our heads and ask for a new manager. we get behind the gaffer and show our support. This is the attitude that makes me proud to be a Liverpool fan and why I believe we our the best supported team in the world.

We must take into consideration that we have had two extremely difficult fixtures to open our Premier League account. We were unlucky to only receive a point against Arsenal and we were outplayed against City. The players are also rusty and not up to top form yet so I feel the best is yet to come.

Lets not forget that players are still getting used to Roy’s management style and tactics so I wouldn’t be expecting top form this early in the season. The best thing we can do in this situation is forget about the result and move on to focusing on the match against Trabzonspor.

As usual... Liverpool started very defensively on difficult away games. In fact too cautious.

Ya 2 strikers were played... one still learning the ropes, the other, just abt match fit.

    So what?

Instructions to Lucas and Gerrard is obviously to choke Man City midfield. Gerrard hardly move up. Lucas was always just in front of the back four. Torres and Ngog were duly denied the supply they needed up front.

City's defense tactic was simple. Wrap around Torres tight. They don't have to do too much with Ngog. Can't dribble, first touch is poor...

The moment Liverpool started to attack (shortly after City's second goal) you can see that Man City's defense aren't any better. They throw just about everybody back to defend. Throwing bodies in the line of shots... Joe Hart again was at his very best to deny Torres.

I really wonder if there is any Liverpool manager who is willingly to risk the more attacking tactics on away travel.

jus haf to wait for torres to get match-fit and meanwhile, try to sign a suitable striking partner for him!

    Roy on Masch omission

Roy Hodgson has revealed that Javier Mascherano was not in 'the right frame of mind' to play in Liverpool's 3-0 defeat at Manchester City.

The Reds midfielder was omitted from the squad for the clash at Eastlands after he was the subject of a bid from Barcelona.

"Javier isn't in the right frame of mind at the moment to play," Hodgson told his post match press conference.

"His head has obviously been turned by the offer from Barcelona but unfortunately, at the moment, the fee that the club thinks is the correct fee and the fee that is being offered is very far apart. Unless that can be resolved he might be unhappy for a long time to come.

"The discussions between Barcelona and the club are being held at high club level and as a result I don't want to say things that may or may not be true.

"I have got no wish to create headlines out of the Mascherano situation and it's not the first time that these things have happened.

"In fact, we have quite a lot of clubs at the moment suffering from players being courted by other clubs and players therefore being unhappy at being required to fulfil their contracts. It has happened to us now.

"This matter has developed over the last three days."

The Reds went down to a heavy defeat after goals from Gareth Barry and Carlos Tevez (2) gave Roberto Mancini's team their first league win of the season.

Hodgson conceded his side didn't perform to their level but felt the scoreline flattered the hosts.

"It doesn't matter whether the result is harsh or not - the result is the result," he said.

"I didn't think we were under the cosh to the extent that 3-0 may suggest.

"I think we were a bit unlucky with that wonderful double save from Hart which might have got us back in the game at 2-0, but we defended poorly for the goals.

"They took their chances well. I thought they played very solidly throughout and they were very strong physically and took charge of the game.

"We were always fighting to get back into it so you just have to accept that it wasn't our night tonight, but we were unable to produce the level of performance necessary to get a good result from this game."

He added: "We are talking about two teams at a similar level, we played away from home tonight and City played well.

"Last week we conceded a goal in the 90th minute after playing for 10 men for 45 minutes of the game.

"We don't think we did too badly in that (Arsenal) game but we didn't do well tonight because we didn't get the result we wanted."

Quizzed about the return of Fernando Torres and the striker's level of fitness, the boss added: "He came back to training three weeks later than everybody else so of course he is still in the middle of a preparation period."
