Default Model Releases

Hi all,

Juz wanted to know if it was necessary to get model releases signed for photos taken on the street?

Appreciate your sharing of experiences.

Cheers!

Model releases are only required if you intend to profit in some way from the shots, for example to use them commercially in advertising or stock sales or exhibitions with prints for sale and then only if it is a single individual to small group of people. Crowd scenes for example are exempted. Shots that leave a person open to public ridicule and or humiliation etc that are used in any non press related scenario should always have a model release and explicit approval for display.

The use of shots for legitimate media coverage (newspaper, magazine stories and or TV coverage etc) are exempted from requiring a model release as such work is deemed to be in the public interest.

There are however some pitfalls, such as privacy laws, harrassment laws and shooting individuals who are on private property. Such laws and indeed the law regarding model releases does vary from country to country.
