have been reading some articles in clubsnap by sulhan on newbie photography.. find it very useful

    hoping to get a DSLR..

i am interested in taking photos, night shots and especially non-grainy clear photos

    what i want:

    a. reasonably priced (not the most important factor)
    b. something i can continue to use whilst in intermediate stage (i perhaps wont ever venture into professional)
    c. good clear shots without noise, photos i can print in a4 size so i can display at my house
    d. shoot clear shots in dim settings. impo: i also want to shoot in black and white.
    e. size is not an issue.
    f. live view (tiltable, responsive, what not) not a consideration at all
    g. reasonably priced lenses support (not really too important, as i dont see myself splurging too much on lenses)
    h. i don't need to shoot at high speed (sports)
    i. movie if present, is a plus but not a need

always see some DSLRs on offer in courts, but usually the original prices of these models are marked up to fool public into think they are heavily discounted...

    but anyways, a big hello!

    Hello dude,

your nick seems familiar, are u from hwz?? or do u surf hwz??

    btw i currently own a fujifilm z5..

    cheers,

    Not really, I'd say.
Check the review of K-x, there is an image about the AF points in the viewfinder which you can select. On most other cameras these marks will be highlighted in red when the focus lock. On K-x the marking stays grey but you have a beep as focus lock indicator.

do you think i can produce better pictures with some training with pentax k-x, canon 550d or nikon d60 (or the d60 replacement, if any) ?

    .......

pentax k-x the prices look very reasonable too

but i suppose canon 550d has better lenses to buy next time?
All the cameras will be able to give good pictures. It will be very dependent on the user.
The Kx does give an advantage at high ISO from ISO1600 onwards, esp given the fact that its a ~$790 (with kit lens) camera.

All camera brands have their good and bad lenses. Especially at the focal lengths from 15mm to 300mm, all brands will have the necessary good quality lenses to cater for the user.

A d60 is good definitely a good entry level dslr. very user friendly and easy to use. Main set back is can only auto focus on AF-S and AF-I lenses. You might not understand what it meant, just say only new lenses from nikon and some 3rd party lenses can be used if u need autofocus. However, this camera most prob will not follow you thru to intermediate stage (I personally dont know what stage is that haha). But thanks to my d60, it taught me quite a bit before i got myself a d90. Now my d60 becomes my backup camera or my gf's camera whenever we go photographing together. And dont misunderstand, it doesnt mean d60 dont take good pics. its the man, not the camera as many will say. And its been reviewed that d60 actually renders better colors than a d90 in jpeg mode.

Congrats on your decision ! Now after the camera and the dry cabinet...... comes the tripod (pretty neccesary for night shots).

    Ever thought of Olympus DSLRs?
Kit 2 includes wide and tele lenses. All compact lenses.

    Quite good for travelling.

I second that. 7fps, 921k screen (for the A550) and Auto HDR. These are all useful stuff which you can't find in other cams for the same price. An having in-built stabilizer will be a big money saver when you buy additional lens.
