Thread: Jumping ship to Canon

Sony is number 3 because of their branding. Many dslr users have never used a film slr before so when buying a dslr they would naturally go for a name that they know. Although brands like pentax have been in the business for very long it is not well known outside the photography community. Nikon & Canon can still attract new users due to the sheer volume of advertising they do.

I disagree. It is one smaller part of the equation. The bigger reasons are the huge inflow of capital into R&D, new solid performers in the product lines, a complete product line-up and, most importantly, an aggressive marketing and pricing strategy.

All brand are good and choose according to your needs.
    This I agree totally

And that is also why prosumers never caught up in AF speed.

Other than contrast detect AF, what other benefits will you get from losing the mirror and prism? Apart from size that is? Your argument just can't stand.

My point exactly. EVILs and DSLRs are cameras of different types and genres. And they each fullfill a certain slice of the needs of the market. EVIL design is just inherently not suited for a large slice of work that the DSLR are being used for.
    I concur!
Call me traditionalist, but not a single one of the EVILs currently on the market can genuinely replace my DSLR in my opinion. It can certainly complement my DSLR, but not totally replace it. Besides the immediacy of the viewfinder response, the ergonomics of a DSLR simply cannot be matched by an EVIL. And since the whole point of an EVIL is compact-ness, I can't foresee them making a D3s-sized EVIL ever.... so... where does that leave the DSLR...? CONTINUING to be well-used, which is my point.
    Exploring! :)

So since you are a student and you have much passion for photography, why not move to brands that are more popular? That way, getting things will be easier and cheaper, and servicing won't be much as pain in the @ss like sony...
Wow, you really don't have a clue. I can even go to John 3:16 and get Tamron and Sigma lenses for sony. As for their service, it's fast, it's cheap, and I can bring my camera to any SonyStyle all over Singapore. No need to go to harborfront, etc.

    agree with this.

EVILs are not meant to replace DSLRs, but to complement them.

I think the best way to use an EVIL is to fix a prime lens on it that will complement the lens on the main camera (DSLR). For example if im walking around with a 70-300 (full frame), I could bring along a NEX 5 with the 16mm prime with me. So that in the event that I need to shoot wide angle, i dont hv to switch lens, I just take out the NEX5 and shoot.

TS, I think you should close this thread soon, because it's digressed into "EVIL vs DSLR" and "why Sony is such a great DSLR brand" instead of focusing on your question... haha

As it always would, anyway. There's no point to even posting a "jumping ship to brand XXX" thread as you could basically sum up the response as: "so what? doesn't impact me and it's you throwing your money away, not me."

Yes. Even the popular Tokina 11-16/2.8 is now available in Sony mount.

hA HA BUT it is such posts that invoke the most posts and discussions

But back to the lens bit , I agree with Cichlid view. I also dont like to use other people's lens. I might borrow the whole camera with lens to try for a while , but not the lens.

I think its like a toy, or something more personal like bolster. I dont want to use others , but mine . lol

i hope dslr will stay and not be taken by EVIL... i cannot imagine using a electronic viewfinder... i tried one before..... i hated it..

i don't mind the big and heavy dslr really... take it as weight lifting training..

but my point is, why would you dig deep into something with no clear vision?..

take a look at Olympus E-Volt, after battling with C & N on dslr segment & with promising products, where are they now?, Micro four-thirds (EVIL)?

and how about Samsung with their GX22 (same dna as Pentax K20D), they elso evolved to NX10, also an EVIL...

so i wont be surprised if alpha dslr becomes extinct coz its already facing its extinction...
I do not agree when you say EVILs have no vision. Most EVIL manufacturers seem to have lenses announced and bodies on the way. Even Samsung have 5 new lenses announced and to be released before the end of this year. I look forward to seeing what the Schneider collaborated lenses can do. I am frankly astonished at the capability of the 30mm/F2 kit with the NX10.

IMO, Olympus did well to get this far, even with noisier 4/3rd sensors. Samsung's GX20 (not 22) was basically a re-branded Pentax camera. The NX is purely Samsung though, which should mean more commitment.
did i say EVIL has no vision?... im referring to Alpha DSLRs and other DSLR brands that are diverting to EVILs...

why would you invest on alpha dslr when sony's future is the NEX platform?...

i do think that it will be never ending to compare between brands or contemplating if you should make the update... be satisfied with what you have!

since you mentioned that your friend can lend you those lenses when necessary, this is a very big plus point to make the jump! you can have a try @ different lenses before knowing what is it you are really looking for in photography!

Disagree with that view. Sony has segmentised NEX to bridge Cybershots and Alphas plus Cybercams. A new Cybercam has been developed by Sony that allows interchangeable lens to be mounted on the Videocam. So I think the strategy is pretty clear as to where NEX is.

If you look at the interest the NEX has aroused , its mainly those looking for a companion camera to complement their DSLR. At least thats what I see the NEX is for.

Why abandon the DSLR line when they are starting to gain foothold in market share ?

But I agree this thread has gone into multi dimensions.

    1) EVIL Versus DSLR
    2) Focusing on EVIL = Neglecting DSLR line

But then again, its generating quite a bit of interesting and provocative comments that are worthy for debate and discussion. Hence

This shows how little u understand Sony.

Unlike nikon and canon which depends largely on their camera and consumer electronics business for profits, Sony is a company which has much diverse business plans (microchips, movies, gaming, consumer electronics etc just to name a few). The difference between Sony and canikon or other camera makers is that Sony has a much much stronger financial might.

When a normal company comes out with a new product, they usually will diverge manpower and resources from their factory to work on the new product.

    But not Sony.

When Sony decides to produce Nex, they opened a new factory specially for Nex production, instead of making them in existing alpha dslr production factories. Sony can do this sort of thing because they got the money to do it. Therefore its no problem at all for Sony to work on both Nex and Alpha production. I think the Nex factories are just a minor financial strain on Sony's piggy bank, it isn't gonna affect the alpha productions at all. if anything, the nex, together with the new Interchangable Lens Video Camera (coming out end of the year), will boost sales of alpha lenses, which in turn will generate alpha based profits for Sony.

Nex isn't killing alpha. It will help alpha instead.
