There are both lotus and water-lilies at SBG.

Another great place for photographing lotus is Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West (Ave 6). The season is here and plentiful of blooms.

Haha, the lotus are in the pond. And the pond is across the road (Ave 6) from the AMK Community Library. Maybe you can spot the giant American bullfrogs too.

There are plenty of lotus blooming at Kampong Java Park pond (beside KK Hospital). Happy photographing.

took this a few weeks ago. boochap's pics... those are lotuses, this is a water lily? what are the general features? the flowers are very poetic and beautiful...

and this, where can i find these type of flowers? i saw some in taiwan near some bamboo plants when i was there for an exercise.

lotus and lily are usually used interchangebility, althought there is a difference between them botanically ...lotus belongs to the bigger water lily family, there are 5 species altogether, 3 in the Nymphaea genus and 2 in the Nelumbo.

the lotus that i shot belong to the Nelumbo genus...large flowers and leaves that sometimes grow up above water. i think the botanica name is N. nucifera, or commonly known as the sacred lotus or indian lotus, because of it's association with both Hinduism and buddism. he2 hua, lian2 hua, both refer to lotus in chinese.

the shot taken by ziedrich shuold be a Nymphaea water lily.

classification of flowering plant is : family -> genera -> species (hybrid).

boochap, I'm not a botanist either but there are somewhere like 8 species of Nelumbo and literally hundreds (not counting varieties) of Nymphaea. You can check out the International Plant Name Index and do a genus search.

Hehe...
Few days ago, I have just been informed that opposite Ang Mo Kio's library, there is one pond of wild lotus. I haven't been there yet but will try it soon.

ya, u r rght. there are thousands of species plus hybrids in the whole of water lily family, but only about 5 species are lotus, 3 species in nym, 2 in nelumbo.. india lotus belong to the nelumbo...other other nelumbo lutus should be originated from americas.

similiarly, there are hundred thousands of species plus hybrid in the whole of orchid familty...but less than 70 species are paphiopedilum or slipper orchid.
