Wah. Yesterday I "unpacked" my softbox to fix on the lightstand, played with my 75cm light tent (ok, it's huge IMO). And struggled to keep and pack them back. I realise it's tough job!!!

and I need more light! growl.

But softbox, off light portraits is really fun!!

I presume you're talking about portraits.

Some things I do to make life easier:

Shutter speed always kept constant, usually from 1/60 - 1/200

If indoors, aperture kept constant, f8-f11, and flash between 1/2-1/1 power. I tend to adjust only flash distance.

If outdoors, flash between 1/8-1/1 power and flash position fixed. I tend to adjust only aperture.

The main idea is to keep most of the variables fixed and only make adjustment to one. That's how I started with off-camera flash, until I got more familiar with my equipment. I use a lightmeter most of the time these days.

wah! thanks ah flea (sounds wrong)! been really helpful. I guess I was so happily dependent on Av mode that when it is M it kind of throws me off and had to think alot more. I can't seem to decide which to adjust when the exposure is off! (Should i adjust the ISO, or maybe e aperture, the flash output etc).

Guess I tend to leave the shutter speed pretty constant as I want to make sure it's at a speed I can handle (of course if allowed for any faster then no worries).

Main problem is the flash.. no idea how much to set and what distance etc. aiyo so much to learn. btw, where to buy light meter ah? is it ex?

ah flea! LOL. Please call me Zack.

For strobist, better to use M all the way. I don't want the camera to decide for me. ISO I usually leave at 100. ISO/shutter speed affects ambient, aperture/flash output affects subject. I usually place the flash 1-2.5m from subject, depending on what light modifier I use. Another tip is to find out how many stops does your light modifier eat. Indoors, I will jump straight to full power. Outdoors, I will start with 1/8 power.

Lightmeter is generally useful for 2 light & above setup. With 1 light, I still use my guesstimation method. Under the sun, light meter may not work well as well. (or maybe it's my cheapo lightmeter)

    I bought mine for 200+

There's a Sekonic model at around 200+ IIRC.

wahahaha. yea. mug. =x ryans correct. nice spotting the mugs.

the 24 - 105 is a mug as well, got both for less than 40 with shipping through ebay. awhole lot cheaper than mass sales. and the 24 - 105 one is suprisingly realistic.
