The large cranes are already there and scaffolding are being erected on the floodlights tower.

Consortium says Sports Hub must enjoy a packed calendar of events

SINGAPORE - By April 2014, Singapore will have a state-of-the-art Sports Hub, with its 55,000-seat National Stadium as the jewel in the crown.

A significant step towards realising the dream was taken yesterday with some 100 invited guests and media witnessing the ground-breaking ceremony at the 35-ha site.

Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Dr Vivian Balakrishnan flagged off the five-minute ceremony in front of the grandstand of the 37-year-old National Stadium. Outgoing Singapore Sports Council (SSC) chairman Alex Chan and Mr Ludwig Reichhold, managing director of Dragages Singapore, lead company of SportsHub Pte Ltd, sounded air horns for the four Komatsu crushers to begin demolishing the lower sections of the spectator stands.

Mr Chan said the big test for the facility would be its ability to inspire more Singaporeans to take up sports. "This project will fail if it doesn't turn the hearts and minds of (more) Singaporeans towards sports," said the former national swimmer.

SportsHub Pte Ltd, tasked by the SSC to design, build, finance and operate the facility on a 25-year lease, acknowledged its vital role in ensuring the annual calendar is packed with events and activities.

Entry prices to use the facilities will be kept affordable and, apart from Twenty20 cricket and a proposed Asean Football League, it is working on securing a range of events and activities that caters for everyone.

"We're in a position to pick and choose how we want to open the Sports Hub. This is the kind of recognition this project is getting," said Mr Mark Collins, managing director of venue management firm Global Spectrum Asia, a member of SportsHub Pte Ltd.

Only a small part of the National Stadium is standing.

Do head down before it is just a pile of rubble.
