    Default Newbies question on lens calibration

    Hi, recently I have been hearing alot of stuff on lens calibration, and is wondering the following;

    1) Do we need to calibrate all our lens so as to achieve better sharpness?
    2) How to we calibrate our lens, can we do it at home or do we need to bring it to respective service center such as CSC and NSC?
    3) Do CSC/NSC actually do calibration for third party lens? if no;
    4) Where do we do calibration for third party lens?
    5) How do we know if we need to do calibration?

    (Sorry for such noob questions).

    Thanks.

    As far as I'm aware...you don't need to calibrate your lens unless you gave it a hard knock during use. If the lens is not as sharp as you think it should then no matter how much calbration you perform, it will not be sharp.

    The sharpest lens has always been the prime lens followed by macro lenses and then zooms.

    Stick with brand name lenses e.g. Nikon which is an optical company or carl zeiss which is the specialist optics manufacturer.

    1. Depends on what you're expecting. Perceived lack of sharpness can be due to many things, including but not limited to inaccurate focusing. If you're happy with your lens' sharpness, let it be.

    2. Have to be done at service center
    3. No they don't
    4. some 3rd party lens manufacturers do have service centers here in singapore too. I think Tamron's one is at Changi North.
    5. see #1. You can try downloading some focus chart too and do your own experimentation.

    hope that helps

    hi,

    share with u smth. my friend has a tamron which always has images that are not sharp for some reason. after using for several months, she couldnt take it anymore and sent it for servicing and after that she's very happy with it.

    i dont know what has gone wrong though. but anyway she has since changed to prime, and she let me have her copy at a very good price.

    if u r looking at this thread, hope u r doing fine : ) i like the lens.

    1) No. Only if your lens is back or front focusing, calibration can help. In all other issues, calibration cannot help

    2) If you are ask skilled as a lens repair technician, you can calibrate your lens. Or, if you own a higher end camera body like D300/s, you can fine tune the AF.

    3) No.

    4) Each 3rd party brand has their own service center. Tokina SC is with Cathay Photo. Sigma has its own SC. Tamron's SC is under JEL Corp.
