u mean for this shot? for this shot, the filter is right in the middle... as in the centre of the filter is at the centre of the lens...

    like this:

    --|
    --|

i have a shot where i push it lower, and the top part becomes even darker...

i remember you did said before that the tianya filters are not manufactured the same, as in each piece is a little different... so i guess mine is like this...

your graduation seems too high here.

in this case, i think it is a tough nut, because you have that tree line there, even a usual soft gnd will not be very useful. you will probably need something like a cokin FULL GND.

personally, i would use exposure blending here, or if the sky is not blown out without GND usage, can easily use layers to darken it slightly more using layer --> multiply.

i see... is your tianya like that? i thought my tianya is wonderful until i got cokin.. then i can see the diff in quality... i can see small patches near the graduation breakline for my tianya...

i am not blaming the tool, for your tianya shots are really good... but at least this is what i observed...

actually what do u prefer? layer blending or gnd? do u think gnd offer adv over hdr or layer blending? i know moving things are bad for hdr... and i really hate doing hdr, too time consuming...

    patches? ........

i have not seen patches leh.

i tend to use gnd for sunset shots, daytime, if need be will exposure blend.

why? sunset shots, you need to one shot get all. not every time you will have chance to slowly exposure for foreground, slowly exposure for bg, the light changes, and this will affect the results for everytime, not just one particularly exposure.

exposure blending will be useful for things that gnd is not so good for, say, cityscapes.. etc.

Do note that not all Tianya GNDs are created equal. You probably got a bad copy.

Well, that's what I thought too. You get what you pay for and I got a really terrible copy. No doubt they're cheap but I'd rather not play russian roulette when it comes to buying stuff.

Friend, for that kind of shot, you don't really need an ND grad filter. A polarizer would be much more suitable.

I find that when using the tianya ND8 or ND4 individually the color cast is almost not there or very minimal.
Like already mentioned I also have no problems with the tianya's GNDs (but so far i have only used GND & GND blue)

the color cast in my opinion is intolerable when the gnd 8&4 are stacked together

images below are identical (i hope)
    both shot at f20, 1/2sec iso 200
both images(RAW) were zeroed in LR exported to jpeg

    a)tianya nd8+graduated blue

    b)tianya nd8+nd4+graduated blue

color correcting the first image was fairly easy(using LR) but i can never get the second image color right (maybe can be done in photoshop, still improving my photoshop skills).

if someone can kindly point me in the right direction on how to minimise the color cast of the 2nd image. i would be really grateful

Nonetheless i did have a go at cokin and lee filters my friends use and the lee filter system is color cast free to my untrained eyes.. but price wise

    cheers
