for this case, the punishment was definitely not befitting the violation, since having a man less would have made no difference whatsoever.

the ball was certainly goal-bound and surely would've been the game-winning goal, thus the 'last man pulling the striker down' argument doesn't apply.

this is sport, so values like sportsmanship should be upheld. life, on the other hand, is a different story, so there shouldn't be a comparison.
Yes, if it has happened much earlier in the game, I am sure no one will call Saurez a cheat but a professional foul. This happened at the last kick of extra time which changes the whole picture. But going strictly by the rules, the punishment has been applied. It is a clever application of the rules on Saurez part. Seems like FIFA needs to really look at the issues arising from this WC.

he did the right thing for the team.

its a pity Ghana did not score from the resulting spot-kick.

he got sent off(his punishment) and Ghana got the spot-kick plus numerical advantage, albeit with not much time left.

i would say Ghana blew their chance. a pity.

Except that it looked like he really could have stopped it without using his hands, which were essentially brought up to keep the ball away from his face ^.^

he can actually gloat about it..

Suarez happy with 'Hand of God'

i highly doubt he was keeping the ball away from his face as well.

I think he was happy too early, as I read that Suarez will get 2x suspension due to the hand ball. This means he will miss the final if Uruguay qualify to the final stage. This case is still under investigation and FIFA won't take easy this time.

What a shame to Suarez !

No replication of Hand of God anymore

Seems like a good shot stopper, maybe Real Madrid, Man City or Chelsea would join in the race to sign him as a goalkeeper.

    This is easy to solve.
Referee just award the goal to Ghana on the spot.
    Do not need any penalty.

Intuitively, that seems like the right thing to do, but based on FIFA rules (i know, they are flawed), that ruling would not hold up.

The only possibility of that happening is that the ball has crossed the line before Saurez handled it.

Yes, the ball has not cross the line. It cannot be considered a goal. Even if a bird or dog appear from nowhere and stopped the goal bound ball, the ref still cannot blow for a goal.

Uruguay won.

I personally think that Saurez is a hero. He kept a national's dream alive. But others labelled him as a cheat. I wonder how many Singaporeans will actually perform a self sacrificing act.
a total cheat to me, worse than diving or watever.

wat self-sacrifice? it's just a red card and another match suspended, not like he will be banned from football for life.

Lucky for Suarez, he was not playing against Pakistan or Iraq or Afghanistan.

Otherwise his words "self -sacrifice" will be more correct than he ever imagined.

But lucky Uruguay, they were playing against Ghana.

Did he cheat? Is there any doubt?

    cheat | ch ēt|
    verb
1 [ intrans. ] act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, esp. in a game or examination : she always cheats at cards.

Just because someone else would do it doesn't make it right. He got punished, and Ghana missed their opp. Perhaps there should be a goaltending rule like in the NBA (they get the goal and a free throw, IIRC)

A hero? Hardly. If it was instinctive, then we should question why he has that instinct. Was he perhaps a goalie in the past?

What made it even worse were his 'hand of God' comments after the match -- handling the ball could be seen as an act of desperation; those comments were the mark of a true a**hole.

Ghana lost because Gyan missed a penalty. They can only blame themselves.

ok. He cheated to win. But nobody remembers the journey, only the result. If Uruguay eventually lifts the WC, Saurez will be an idol. Look at Maradona.

Also, can one be too clean to win a competition? There are people who talk about rules and sportsmanship. Sports are competitive in nature, you try to win at all costs. Instinctive cos he is a survival. Instinctive cos he is street smart. Instinctive cos he has the desire to win at all costs.

I do not see any difference between bringing down a player in a one on one situation and this handball situation.

The offense was duly punished with a red card.

cheater, hero or not, that is up to individual to decide.

And I think Ref should not be given the power to award the goal too. The game should not be decided based on what might possibility happen when in reality it has not.

Lol. This is funny. Maybe he is a ruby/basketball player when he is young?

I think is instint too. Just unlucky Ghana miss the chance.
