Default Suggest a all in one lens for my Canon 1000 D

    Hi Friends
I have a Canon 1000 D camera with 18-55 NON IS kit lens, i mostly do travel, family portraits, flowers, macros, i am not satisfied with 18-55 lens and i am very very much confused between Canon 18-135, 17-85, 18-200,
    Sigma 17-70 ( 1:2 macro ), I am on a limited budget.

Prevoiusly i had a Nikon F 80 with Sigma 28-135 ( 1:2 ) macro zoom lens, i was satisfied with this lens, this was good for wide angle shots, for portraits and for macro also, i want a lens similar to this one.

Please suggest me a lens for my Canon 1000 D.

    Thanks
    alok

What is it about the kit lens that you are not satisfied about?

Besides macro, it's acceptable range for you to explore what range you like to shoot with.

For that budget the Sigma 17-70 2.8 - 4.0 HSM OS is one good choice. It is wider and has a longer reach than the kit lens. The IQ is good if there is enough light pus it is a half macro lens that shoot at mini distance of 0.2m.

You can read more about it just google it.

A Raynox DCR-250 filter for your 18-55 would enable you to get good close-up shots. Not yet 1:1 macro, but good enough for starters. It's only ~1/10 the price of the 100mm L macro!

its always a compromise if you are looking for an 'all-in' zoom

thats why the system was built to allow for lenses of different focal lengths and different properties to be interchanged according to needs and applications
shaddap and just shoot .... up close

With a budget of US$400, you have effectively knocked out all the stabilized 18-200 and beyond "superzooms".

But before I venture a guess on what will be good for you, which part of your current setup are you dissatisfied with?

Since you are going to invest US$400, save up a little more to get a good walkabout lens which would last you for years.

I paid S$924 or about US$655 for a brand new Sigma 18-250mm DC HSM which was launched in Jan 2009 and I've not regretted this purchase at all.

This will cover all ranges from macro, wide angle to telephoto zoom. On a crop sensor, this will equate to 28.8-400mm! I've found the focusing speed to be quite satisfactory and image quality at full zoom acceptable.

These pictures of the delivery truck were taken with the Sigma 18-250mm on a Canon 7D:

    (1) 18mm, 1/30, f3.5

    (2) 80mm, 1/160, f5.6

    (3) 250mm, 1/400, f7.1

Has a 1000D once and faced the same dilemma. Ended up with a set of Sigma 17-70 ( non OS ) and Sigma 18-200 OS. This setup satisfied all my needs....minus macro cos i dun do macro.
