A quick guide on Pentax lenses. probably the folks here to tell you lot more:

DA Consumer grade for crop digital SLR body, it does not have any aperture ring and not design for full frame or film camera.
DA* (DA star): Pro grade DA lenses with weather/dust resistant lenses
DA Limited: High quality small prime lenses
FA lens: Pentax lenses from 35mm (full frame) film camera era, compatible with Pentax digital SLR cameras. It comes with an aperture ring for backward compatibility to the old manual film camera.
FA* (FA star): Pro grade FA full frame lenses
FA Limited: High quality small prime full frame lenses

Then you have this DFA lens, which is Digital version of FA lens that does not have the aperture ring, though it works with the new film SLR and future full frame DSLR it will not work with older manual film camera that need to set aperture manually.

DAL is the light version of the DA consumer grade lenses, usually bundle with the entry level DSLR like Km and K-x. The main different is the lens come with plastic mount and does not have the distance marking on the focus ring, this kit lens does not come bundle with lens hood you have to buy it separately.

Not really. The DFA100/2.8 Macro does have an aperture ring.

True, but whether the WR version has aperture ring or not has nothing to do with its DFA designation. What makes a lens a DFA?

A New Series Designed to Optimize Image Quality in Digital SLR Photography

PENTAX Corporation is pleased to announce the development of the new
smc PENTAX-D FA interchangeable lens series, designed to optimize image
    quality in digital SLR photography
. The series also features an image circle
    covering accommodating the 35mm-format film
. As the first models of this new
series, PENTAX will market two compact, lightweight macro lenses for close-up
photography up to a life-size magnification.

    Major Features

    1. High-Performance Optical Design to Optimize Digital Imaging Characteristics

Taking advantage of its advanced optical design technologies, PENTAX successfully optimized the optical characteristics of these new lenses for digital photography, including lens coating and curvature and positioning of optical elements. In particular, flare and ghost images - the most disturbing factors in digital SLR photography - have been reduced to minimum for clear, high-quality digital images.

    2. Image Circle Compatible with 35mm-Format SLR Cameras

The new lenses features an image circle accommodating the image size (36mm by 24mm) of 35mm-format SLR film cameras. As a result, they produces high-quality images with edge-to-edge sharpness and free of vignetting, even when mounted on conventional 35mm-format SLR cameras.
