Liverpool aim to become world's richest club

    By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent

    August 3, 2010

Liverpool stand to become the most powerful club in world football if the takeover deal with a Far East Sovereign Wealth fund is completed.

The deal currently being negotiated by Kenny Huang, and his Far East partner has already laid the blueprint to make Liverpool the wealthiest club on the planet.

A Soccernet source has been given an insight into the ambitious plans to launch Liverpool in China, with internet, sponsorship and promotions aimed to push Liverpool beyond the means of even the richest clubs.

The source describes the plans as taking Liverpool to a scale as yet unseen in English football by tapping into the Chinese markets.

As the Far East group aims to wrest control from American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks, the source believes US companies from Walmart to Apple could seek to work with Liverpool to make enormous inroads within the Chinese markets. That would eventually enable Liverpool to compete to buy the world's best players in every position.

While it has been suggested that there are alternative bidders, Hicks and Gillett would like the banks and the Anfield board to push up the price to include cash for the two shareholders, but the hedge fund backing this bid is in no mood to be stampeded into paying more for control.

The Far East Sovereign Wealth fund knows it is offering Liverpool their greatest opportunity to compete on a world stage with the financial big hitters, a chance that might not materialise again.

The new investors from the Far East believe that the shares are not worth more than the debt, and are therefore worthless, and they have no intention of paying Gillett and Hicks the premium price they have been demanding.

The Americans valued Liverpool at 800 million, but have since dropped their valuation to 600 million. The offer on the table, though, is to cover the debts of 350 million, notably paying off the Royal Bank of Scotland's near-240 million debt.

That is where Hicks and Gillett's Achilles heel lies, and the RBS is keen for this deal to proceed.

Stuttgart claim to have agreed personal terms with defender Philipp Degen after he was told he can leave Liverpool, while the Bundesliga club are also hoping to sign Andre Ayew.

Full-back Degen was informed by Roy Hodgson in the wake of the new manager's arrival at Anfield that he did not feature in his first-team plans and that he was free to look for a new club.

Stuttgart acted quickly and former Borussia Dortmund player Degen is interested in a return to Germany, meaning a deal will now need to be agreed with Liverpool.

Marseille winger Ayew has also decided on personal terms but, according to Stuttgart's director, Jochen Schneider, the French club want to keep the Ghana international.

Schneider told BILD: "We have reached an agreement with the player (Degen). The player wants to join our club.

"It is the same with Ayew, the player wants to move to us. However, Marseille are keen to keep him and have offered him a new contract in time."

    MASCH OUT, POULSEN IN

There may soon be vast funds available to Roy Hodgson but for now he's shopping at the bottom end of the market, with The Sun claiming Liverpool have opened talks with 30-year-old Dane Christian Poulsen, who is surplus to requirements at Juventus.

Poulsen - who won the Danish title under Hodgson at FC Copenhagen - is available for around 6m. As soon as that transfer is completed, Javier Mascherano will be buggering off to Inter Milan to join forces with Raf999 BendHisDick again.

    KIRDI IN `ADVANCED` LIVERPOOL TALKS
    Posted 04/08/10 12:06

A rival consortium to Chinese entrepreneur Kenny Huang are claiming they are close to sealing a deal to buy Liverpool.

Syrian businessman Yahya Kirdi, who represents a group of investors from the Middle East and Canada, has said a price has been agreed and a formal purchase agreement "is in the final stage of negotiation".

However, much the same noises were made by Kirdi's representatives in April and no deal was done, and he has been dealing with the American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett rather than Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton, who has been detailed to sell the club.

Under new rules on club ownership announced by the Premier League on Tuesday, all prospective owners are obliged to give the league 10 days' notice of a takeover and prove they have the funds to sustain the club.

Liverpool and a number of parties contemplating a takeover - including Huang - have already contacted the Premier League to alert them that a change of ownership could be imminent.

A statement from Kirdi said: "The group is in advanced negotiations with Thomas Hicks and George Gillett, co-owners of Liverpool Football Club, to purchase 100 per cent of the club.

"Agreement has been reached on all major terms including the purchase price, repayment of the existing bank debt from RBS and Wells Fargo and financing of a new stadium in Liverpool's Stanley Park. A formal purchase agreement between the parties is in the final stage of negotiation."

Kirdi is a resident of Canada and a former Syria international who oversees investments in Europe and North America on behalf of his investor group, said the statement.

"Liverpool is a massive football club with passionate and proud fans in Merseyside and in every part of the world," said Kirdi.

"With additional money to improve the squad and financing in place to build the new stadium, LFC will be on a solid foundation to compete in the Premiership and in Europe for years to come."

Keith Harris, head of investment bank Seymour Pierce, told Sky Sports News there are still other interested parties looking at the club.

"All I am prepared to say is we've looked at it very carefully on behalf of would-be buyers, who we know are very serious, we know are cash-rich, we know have the right incentive to do it, the right motivation to do it, and are prepared to take a long-term view," Harris said.

"I can't say any more at the moment. We have represented a buyer in the past and that is an ongoing situation."

Liverpool takeover: Kenny Huang 'has not made formal offer'

In a fresh twist to the Liverpool takeover saga Chinese businessman Kenny Huang has distanced himself from suggestions that he has made a formal bid for the club.

In a statement issued by Huang's Hong Kong-based public relations advisers Hill and Knowlton he said he had registered interest in buying the club but has made no formal bid.

Huang is still considered by chairman Martin Broughton as a potential buyer for the club, but his statement indicates unease at the widespread discussion of his approach for the club, which according to his UK public relations team was initially made to RBS, the club's bank. Huang suggests that speculation about his intentions "should be given very little credence" unless issued in his name by Hill and Knowlton.

The statement reads: "In response to widespread media reports that Kenny Huang had made a formal bid for Liverpool Football Club, Mr. Huang would like to emphasise that he has registered interest in investing in Liverpool FC but has made no formal bid.

"There has been much speculation and commentary from a wide array of people, many of whom have little knowledge of the facts. Unless there is a statement that specifically comes from Mr. Huang or his authorised representatives, which presently is solely Hill & Knowlton Hong Kong office, we would suggest such comments should be given little credence.

"At this point in time there is nothing further for Mr. Huang to announce. If there comes a time where this changes, we will make the appropriate announcements."

Huang's statement comes hours after Yahya Kirdi, a Syrian businessman, claimed to be in "advanced negotiations" with owners Tom Hicks and George Gillet, and investment banker Keith Harris said he was representing a "very serious" potential bidder for the club.

China fund raises finance to match Liverpool asking price

The Chinese government fund represented by Kenny Huang has spent the past fortnight raising precisely the amount of cash required to finance a bid for Liverpool. Sources have confirmed to Digger that the China Investment Corporation, the sovereign wealth fund to the world's most populous nation, is the organisation being fronted by Huang, who yesterday admitted interest in bidding for Liverpool.

In a series of trades since 19 July, CIC has sold $558m of shares in Morgan Stanley, equating to 351.4m. That sum is equivalent to Liverpool's debt to the nearest decimal place, and is exactly the number insiders say has been quoted to interested parties as the sale price.

China Daily, the English-language arm of the Chinese state media, reported yesterday: "China Investment Corp, the Chinese sovereign wealth fund that bought a 9.9% stake in Morgan Stanley in 2007, sold $90.5m of shares in the investment bank on 30 July, bringing the total amount divested in the last two weeks to about $558m."

Although sovereign wealth funds have enormous values of assets under management, cash is generally tied up in equity and bond markets. This requires liquidation by share sales before major new investments can be made. It is therefore hugely significant that the 351.4m number is also equivalent to Liverpool's debt, suggesting that CIC is shifting its assets ahead of an offer for the five-times European Cup winners.

It also indicates that despite the ambitions of the Anfield club's chairman, Martin Broughton, to generate a return for Tom Hicks and George Gillett, China is refusing to reward them for their three-and-a half-year ownership of the club. The Americans' capacity to dictate terms is further reduced by the fact that there are few other credible bidders preparing to compete with Huang and CIC.

Even those involved in the sale process have dismissed the announcement yesterday from Yahya Kirdi, the former Syrian footballer with business links in Canada, of his intention to compete with Huang for Liverpool. Kirdi has previously talked of his interest but is said not to have meaningfully pursued it, but his interest could raise the price that current owners are looking for. The Rhone Group has also re-emerged as a possible interested party. But although it is regarded as being financially capable of mounting a bid, the private equity firm has come to the table before, having looked at a minority-stake investment in March. But it did not go through with the deal.

Huang confirmed for the first time yesterday he had contacted Liverpool's brokers in the sale who together are Broughton and Barclays's investment-banking division, Barcap to "register interest". He did state he "has made no formal bid", however CIC's cash-raising exercise demonstrates it is in a position to make an approach at any time.

In that event the red half of Merseyside might be concerned about the impact of direct investment from the Chinese government in their club. But in anticipation of negative reaction to its world-wide investment activities, CIC's website states: "CIC strives to contribute to the prosperity and development of local economies.

It adds: "CIC usually does not seek an active role in the companies in which it invests nor attempts to influence those companies' operations. CIC seeks long-term, stable, sustainable, and risk-adjusted return."

Although the message of prudence, at a time when CIC's dumping of 531.4m of Morgan Stanley shares has conspicuously not generated any money for transfer activity, might dishearten fans, it should not be interpreted as a lack of team investment. CIC would be purchasing a debt-free club and would be capable of taking out smaller, more affordable loans to finance team strengthening this summer.

And after the years of chaos associated with the unsustainable debt run up under Hicks and Gillett, that would no doubt be a welcome relief to Liverpool fans, as will the fact CIC is happy with Roy Hodgson being the manager.

side track from the usual news we're all been hearing the past few days..

    Kelly handed England call

    from Liverpoolfc.tv

Liverpool youngster Martin Kelly has been named in Stuart Pearce's England Under-21 squad for the first time for next week's friendly with Uzbekistan.

Kelly, who impressed for the Reds during pre-season, is included in the 19 man party as Pearce runs the rule over his youngsters ahead of the forthcoming European Championship qualifiers against Portugal and Lithiania.

"Martin Kelly has played for Liverpool in this pre-season in a European qualifying tie and I also saw him with the younger age groups, so it's a great opportunity for him," said Pearce, who also handed first call-ups to Phil Jones, Jordan Henderson and Marc Albrighton.

"Because we were so successful a year ago reaching the European Championship Final, there was no preparation time for many friendlies before we went straight into qualifying, so it makes it difficult to have a look at players and tinker with the squad.

"This match will give us a chance to prepare for what will be two very important games next month."

    POULSEN LIVERPOOL TALKS TO CONTINUE
    Posted 05/08/10 13:16

Christian Poulsen's agent has opened negotiations with Liverpool but is not sure if an agreement will be reached.

Poulsen has emerged as a transfer target for the Reds this summer, with Roy Hodgson confirming his interest in the Juventus midfielder this week.

Liverpool have spoken to Poulsen's representative, Joern Bonnesen, and are reported to have offered a three-year deal.

However, it does not look like anything will be finalised in the near future after Bonnesen returned to Denmark.

"I don't know if we will reach an agreement," the agent told Tipsbladet.

"I will go home without a contract and we will work from there.

"This is not something which will be resolved in two minutes."
