Default Newbie Questions on Sinar~!

hi all,

was amazed by the results of a 4x5 slides i scanned for harshdream yesterday..
Plan to try out LF but dunno anything about it at all.
1)are there any significant difference between a Sinar F and a Sinar F1 ?
2)are the shutter separated from the lens ?or built together like a leaf shutter?
3)Are all the diff lens interchangeable on any brand ?do we juz have to find the correct lens board size to mount the lens ?
4) are we able to visualize the effect of tilt swing on the ground glass?
5)are those quickload sheet films compatible with every 4x5 system?
6)If i'm using sheet film holder,do i have to send in the whole film holder for processing ?

Regards
kex

Hi brett,
i'm quite low on budget now, would prefer to play ard with it and see how it works, which i think is the fun part, isn't it ?
would prefer to spend that amount on film and processing.

Hi Kex

>was amazed by the results of a 4x5 slides i scanned for >harshdream yesterday..
>Plan to try out LF but dunno anything about it at all.
1)are there any significant difference between a Sinar F and a Sinar F1 ?

Aside from price, all parts of F & F1 & F2 can be interchanged
F1 front tilt mech slightly different from F
makes it easier to use, is not obstructed when front standard
fully down ( i think )
F2 got geared forcus on front standard
F & F1 have only got rear geared focus....
If really on budget look for a old Sinar Alpina
same as F except using a flatish rail i/o round ones.

> 2)are the shutter separated from the lens ?or built together > like a leaf shutter?

Shutters can be bought separate
but you would usually buy lens together with shutter
and most LF lens are using leaf shutters.

> 3)Are all the diff lens interchangeable on any brand ?do we
> juz have to find the correct lens board size to mount the
> lens ?

correct, except you also must make sure rear lens element
not too big that cannot mount into front camera standard.

> 4) are we able to visualize the effect of tilt swing on the
> ground glass?

no need to visualize, can see effect immediately on groundglass

> 5)are those quickload sheet films compatible with every 4x5
> system?

I have not use quickload before ( $$ )
but if your holder can load into camera back
than ok liow lor...

> 6)If i'm using sheet film holder,do i have to send in the
> whole film holder for processing ?

If you wan't to, no prob one
else just unload film at home and put into org 4x5 film box
and send in

now my question : ) ...
how do you scan 4x5 slides ?
which scanner and how the quality like : )

On a side note, if you finally step into 4x5
i got some very very expired Velvia ( say 1996 )
in my freezer that i can let you have for play play
last time i used ( say 2002 ) still seems ok

Quickload film is about 50% more expensive than sheet film, but it saves you on the weight. Alternatively, get a used Graphic quickchange type holder, fits 6 sheets, forgot the exact name. I am sure Harshan can help you, otherwise I know someone whomay want to sell it. Sold on eBay frequently.
