    Default Advice Required

    Hi

I'm a newbie and I have a question that needs a senior to advise me on.

How do I see if the lens is wide, teleport or for micro?
I know there are a lot of different lens sold outside with different reading but I don't know what reading is for which type.

    Any help/advice is gladly appreciated.

Erm.. So for AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR is it Wide or teleport or which category does it really falls into or is it juz an average lens?

Forgive me for asking as the website category it as DX. I don't quite get it from what it say. Able to put it in layman term? Sorry for the trouble.

DX refers to lens meant for APSC sensor..APSC sensor=cropped sized sensor as compared to Full frame sensor.

    18-105=27-157mm(35mm equivalent)..Yes, it's a wide angle at 27mm.

ok.. I have a curious question. Without guide or sth. How do you know if the lens is wide or not. is it based on " 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G " or what.

35mm or 27mm. How do you arrive to this value?

Look carefully at the link catchlight provided. Under "Autofocus Nikkor Lenses", there are "Fisheye", "Wideangle", "Normal", "Telephoto".

Simple. This is how we call it a wide angle lens

A Nikon APS-C sensor has got a 1.5x crop factor. Means all focal lengths indicated on the lens, will have to be multiplied by 1.5. So 18mm x 1.5 = 27mm.

"35mm equivalent" refers to the full frame sensor. Which is roughly 35mm wide.

You would really need to read through the links provided by me/others to get a good feel of it. Ultra wide, Wide, Normal or Telephoto you will need to read up and see the difference.

If you find a lens that can "teleport" please let me know. Climbing mountains with lenses is very tiring, if the lens can teleport itself, it will be awesome!

btw... I think you meant "Telephoto"

I was quite afraid to ask so many question as I'm afraid people might find it irritating.
But at the sametime, the things i google many of them use those technical term in which I simply don't understand and certain things I have no idea how they come about.

Hey skylover, dun feel so intimidated by all these 'Lau Jiao'(old birds) cos all of them started at exactly where you are once.

Take your time to learn and in 2 years time and after 10,000 shots you will come back to this thread and ask yourself How/Why did I ever ask these questions???

I recommend you to go to the library & borrow lots of magazines & books on photography to read & at the same time join the outings to learn from fellow CSers. Just continue to be gungho and you'll be up to speed in no time
Photography? It's all in your mind...

I do think Newbies should cultivate a mentality of self-discovery...
With the internet, information is readily available.

If i have a DSLR with a kit lens 18-55mm ("standard" 1st-timer gear), when I turn the zoom ring from 18mm to 55mm, I can see that the far object is being "pulled" closer in my viewfiner.... EUREKA! larger mm number means more 'reach'!!

Does it really matter whether it's labelled wide-angle, telephoto, teleport, etc...?
    Exploring! :)
