sorry to come back again. pls understand i am not trying to set fire here, just review the EX1.

taken from dpreview site on EX1 pg#07,

Beyond this, the camera is automatically correcting distortion, chromatic aberration and purple fringing, meaning there are very few obvious problems making it into the final images. As shown in the studio comparison shot, the camera we based our review on occasionally shows a loss of image sharpness down the left-hand side. The effect is only really visible with this essentially flat target that is shot at a relatively close focus distance. The performance shown in this review is fractionally better than that of a second unit Samsung sent us to check the results against (which instead showed a soft right-hand side).

do u mean this? dont look like a defective camera to me base on the description.

    This (pg 8 & 9):

"At low ISO settings, the image quality is generally good with good levels of detail. However, our camera had a distictly poor left edge (when shooting a flat taget at 72mm equivalent focal length at close focusing distances). This defect isn't nearly so pronounced in real-world shooting which tends to use greater focus distances. By ISO 400 the level of detail is being reduced by the effects of noise reduction but the images are still very usable.”

"The apparent lens defect is, of course, still visible in the RAW files but the image quality is generally pretty good. These conversions have noise reduction reduced to a minimum and you can see that, despite the high levels of chroma noise, there's plenty of detail to work with all the way up to ISO 1600. With careful use of noise reduction, either with the supplied software or a third-party offering, you can get better, more detailed images out of the TL500 at higher ISO settings by shooting RAW."

And as for your quote, the first time I read, I got the whole thing as DPreview receiving 2 cameras, one with a lens defect in the left, and one with the lens defect in the right.

If other EX1s also have these defects then perhaps its a design thing? Otherwise it may well be a QC thing.

Yea that's why i'm curious to find out if it's an isolated prob or are many EX1s affected. Hope some users can weigh in on this.

    New Firmware is aviable:

    FM/201007/20100713152752968/EX1_FW_006291.zip
    (size : 43446 KBytes / updated : 2010-07-13 )

    Found here:

    http://www.samsung.com/ch/consumer/d...&cate_type=all

I upgraded my EX1 with this version and everything worked fine. I can't see any improvments. The macro distance is about 2.5cm now but i think this was also posible with the last firmware.

    Improvements

    ● We improved intermittent error when you turn it on by using playback button.
    ● System stabilization

    Why not more improvements??

Again please pardon the jagged edges... it is due to photoshop.com resize process.

Some round up after ~2 week of use

EX1 is just a compact cam.... cant possible to judge it using DSLR cam and lens standard.
Personally.... I am happy with the amount of control I am getting out of a <600 camera...
It is at best slightly above LX3 .... and definitely not a LX3 killer.... but it is priced at < LX3 ... so I guess .... it is a good deal. If size is not an issue... any cheap recent release dslr would have a much superior image quality then any camera of this type.

I would say it is a good buy... considering I have it constantly with me where ever I go ... allowing me to capture scene which my DSLR cant .. as it is too heavy to bring 24x7.
