Default Tamron 18-250 VS Tamron 18-270 VS Sigma 18-250 VS Nikkor 18-200

I'm thinking of buying one of the above lens.

Any advice from veterans who have tried these lens?

I read that Tamron 18-270 comes with optical stabiliser while the 18-250 does not.

Is it true that with a Nikkon D90 (with image stabiliser), it does not make a difference whether the lens has stabiliser or not?

Also, I'm concerned about the image that Tamron & Sigma produces. Would the image be 'soft'?

    Thanks in advance!

    Since when there's a D90 with built-in stabilizer?

You could always try out the lens before purchasing 'em.

    1. Goto dpreview for lens
    2. Scroll down to superzoom section.
    3. Select and click on the superzoom lens that you are interested.
    4. Read and compare the strengths and weaknesses of these lenses.
    5. Make a comparison and an informed choice of the lens you wanted.

PS. You probably won't find any average Joe or Jane having all these lenses at the same time to give an accurate account if you wanted lens versus lens.

Side track, I thought Canon and Nikon remained firm on the decision to keep the stabilizer to the lenses only.

Anyway, nothing beats testing the lenses out in the shop if TS wants to buy either 1.

That's incorrect. The Sigma 18-250mm is optically stabilized.

Nikon D90 do not have image stabiliser built into their camera. Anyways, IS is for Canon while Nikon's version is Vibration Reduction (VR)

Usually for super zooms, you will have to compromise on IQ for convenience. I would recommend that you check out Tamron's 17-50mm instead, which has good IQ and price.

To TS do some research, fyi the tamron has the best VC stabilization mechanism in the market. Using 3 axis stabilization as compare to 2 axis from ALL other brand.

back to TS, image is soft @ focal length 250mm but acceptable for a walkabout lens
if money is not a concern -> nikon 18~200
    if image quality is concern -> go for f2.8 lens (17~50 / 24~70 / 70~200)

    Agree.

If you buy (I didn't) the latest issue of the Digital Camera Magazine, there is a comparison done on these superzooms. The Nikon came out tops and the Canons did badly. Sigma and Tamron did quite well.

I think so too, don't think they would release an in-body stabiliser to eat into the profit on their lenses. Esp for Canon, the price for a IS and non-IS version is substantial.

I agree, remember the aperture at the tele-length is F5.6 and not F6.3.

That why I am so happy that my 18-200IS is sold as a kit lens.

    Thanks for all the advice.

Sadly, price is a concern. Prob either go for a Sigma with OS or a pre-loved Nikkor. Seems like the price is about the same.
