Default Dragon Hunter

Went down to SBG this morning. Very hot day. Was pleased to get shots of the very elusive Ictinogomphus decoratus melaenops, my favourite dragonfly. Usually it is extremely skittish, but I was lucky today. Before this I was only able to get backside shots of it from far away. Shots were handheld with one hand, with the other hand pulling fern leaves and branches from blocking the lens.

With all this talk of 'Butt Flu', I will try and spread some 'Dragon Fever' back to the community.

Ictinogomphus decoratus melaenops, Front
1/80s f/11.0 at 180.0mm iso200 with Flash, Handheld

Ictinogomphus decoratus melaenops, Side
1/100s f/11.0 at 180.0mm iso200 with Flash, Handheld

Brachydiplax chalybea, Side
1/13s f/16.0 at 180.0mm iso100 with Flash, Tripod

Rhyothemis phyllis, Side
1/100s f/11.0 at 180.0mm iso200 with Flash, Handheld

Full gallery here

Edited: Changed Jpeg compression from 7 to 9.

Jason,
Nice shots of the club-tailed dragonfly. Apparently, these 3 species are known for their territorial behaviour, except for the Rhyothemis phyllis phyllis that is sometimes not so cooperative. Yes, most dragonflies are extremely skittish.. doing a proper approach is very critical.

See whether This Article might help.

Edsel: nicely written article.

YC: I think it's because I saved using Jpeg with compression level 7, which is my normal setting for web. Destroys the bokeh. Maybe I'll try saving with lower compression later.

YC: Heh, no problem.

bangkuangz: Hey man. Yeah just come down next time. Lots of Clubsnappers at Marsh Gardens on Saturday mornings. I'm sure even if they (dragons or butts) fly away, they will come back. Must be patient.
