Since you've the Olympus SP-570UZ, why not exploit the capability of the prosumer to the max. The only thing you cannot do is to change the lens. However you can play around with adapters and filters with the cam. If you find joy in playing with the 570UZ, that will be the time to upgrade to dslr. Otherwise it'll be a waste of money.

Then came the e620, which I thought was a very good dslr for me - small, swivel screen, Olympus colours, no need to keep track of differing crop factors or lens mount... but I couldn't justify buying it when I know my prosumer has been gradually reduced to sitting around and "growing mould".

    .............

Any advice or past experience to share?
I had the e620. You'll be hard pressed to find a more compact dSLR with all its features. It is not the best in terms of performance or IQ. But it is certainly one of the BEST in terms of value for money.

It if fairly compact and durable. I used to carry mine around nearly everywhere. With the Zuiko 25/f2.8, you might even be able to put into a coat pocket. There is no better/more compact lens than the Zuiko 14-54/f2.8-3.5 in terms of price performance and size.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money, yes, you can certainly find good deals on the e620.

Actually, I think the Pentax K-x beats the e620 by a wide margin hands-down in terms of value for money.... But that is just my personal opinion.

Didn't expect this thread to be continuing on after the conclusion that I shouldn't jump onto the DSLR bandwagon yet...

Hmm... but it's heavier, and I'm not sure of the lens compatibility.

Take note of the lens mount type, that's all to think about. For the time being (as long as you learn) stick to those lenses which are specifically built for the respective cameras. Leave out adapters and other stuff. You will notice that every brand has a nice variety of lenses, original one as well as 3rd party.

Pentax K mount has tons of lenses. Old ones too. So considering that, K mount has more lens options than the 4/3 mount (not considering adapters).

And heavier? ya, by 80 grams only. Do you know how 80 grams feels like?
