Optically it's superb, tack sharp, good flat field and handles well.

On the downside the AF is slow and noisy, but you shouldn't use AF with closeup photography anyway.

Nikkor = when you do 1:1 - 1:4 your aperture gets' stopdown. if i recalled correctly, it get's to F4.5/F5

Sigma = Regards of 1:1-1:4 it is still at F2.8

something to ponder about.
That only happens when you are in P,S... but in A and M you get the 2.8

Yup, I have the lens and it's GREAT Super sharp and an excellent choice for macro. As Ian has commented, it's not a fast AF focussing lens, but I find that with my F100, focussing speed is adequate (as opposed to using it on a F75, where I can focus faster using it on manual). The focussing action is also nicely dampened, and is good when focussing manually for macrophotography. This lens also doubles nicely as my portrait lens, as it give me a good working distance for head and shoulder shots.

Sidenote: regarding the aperture issue, go to here for an explanation, which I don't fully understand myself , but is due to the effective aperture being not equal to the actual aperture when you get into macrophotography.

Not sure on a D100 but on a D70 regardless of mode it will show the true aperture value i.e. f5 when you go to 1:1. Maybe it is because of the new electronics hee he.
