The 24-105 is definitely a better lens, in terms of its built and image quality.

Since you are still a beginner and has no idea what to shot (my assumption), I think you should not restrict yourself first.
What u mention is correct. Cause i'm new to dslr. Recommend me any lens tat can do walkabout, landscape, portrait shot & zooming. Hehe. Hope the lens also can provide gd IQ.

I think you had post something about what lens to recommand or something like that.
You can try out 15-85 and 17-55 for your 550D.
Both very good IQ, but their range is different. give both a try and see which you prefer.

Have you already got your DSLR?
If you're an upgrader from PnS/Prosumer, the image quality of an entry-level DSLR w kit lens will already blow it out of the water, provided you use it well la, of course
Don't go hunting for an upgrade lens yet, until you really know what you want (faster, more reach, wider angle, more solid, etc)
    Exploring! :)

The 15-85 has a much suitable focal length range for general walkabout photography for 7d. 24-105 is not wide enough imo and you may find yourself backing into a corner indoors because it isn't wide enough. However, if you're talking about pairing 24-105 with 5dmk2, well...that would be a totally different story

One is cropped and the other is FF. 7D is an APS-C DSLR .

Ur FOV stays with 15-85 (wide to mid range) but varies for 24-105, which u end up with 38.4-168mm.. IQ wise def FF better, buy can u content with the range (neither here or there imo)

Here is a few combination I can think of–

    1. Tamron 17-50 f2.8 -fast, standard focal length
    2. EF-S 15-85 - wide, IS, all rounder, slow
    3. EF-S 17-55 - standard focal length, IS, fast
    4. EF-S 10-22 - wide

If you have no plan to go full frame in the near future, EF-S lenses are the best for your money. Do read up some reviews on those lens.
