    Dear thomas123123,

    1. Octarine and Nightmare86 are not nasty people. Do a search for their posts. They provide helpful information and advise.

    2. Your first post seems to be asking for the ultimate lens in sharpness, contrast, colour ...
There is no uber lens out there.

    3. You have shared that you bought a Canon 7D and that your kit lens is disappointing. I assume it is the kit lens that came with the 7D. Even the cheapest of the lot is a 18-135mm. That lens is a keeper. If you find it not sharp then perhaps you should send it for a check. Could it be faulty/manufacturing defect?

    4. Most of the other response are right. Most lens have a sweet spot of f8. Even a cheap minolta 35-70mm that I use for FF is too sharp at f8.

    5. Could you be pixel peeping too much into the pix?

    6. Please state your questions in a less callous way. Your first post suggest that insufficient research was done. Your subsequents posts showed a lack of understanding what others are saying.

    7. I leave you to do a search of Octarine and Nightmare86's replies in other posts. You will realise that they do try to help. But they will not spoonfeed.

    8. Enjoy the hobby.

You cannot stand the subject or background OOF? Do you shoot most of your pics at large apertures, i.e. f/2.8, f/2, causing OOF areas?

    you don't think there's a difference between 50mm and 100mm?

seems like you just want to buy buy buy buy buy buy buy for the sake of buying.

you poor, incorrigible soul that has fallen to consumerism. repent now and you will be saved.

Bro, ponder abit...if there's one lens that is good for almost all occasion, why stupid maker like nikon wana make so many different lens and stupid consumer like me will go and buy a few different lens?? there's a reason...obviously not becoz the maker or I am silly to do so...it's because no one lens can be used for all perspective tt one wants to achieve...and as said, it's rather difficult to give you an absolute answer and that is why everyone who responded is trying to point out to you that you need to consider what kind of shots are you looking at before you wana buy....

if a lens is not sharp at all, then it's not a lens, it's probably a Kaleidoscope....even the cheapest manual lens available can achieve great sharpness with stop down at around f8 so there's really no need to worry what lens is sharpest...every lens has it's characteristics and you have to learn the characteristics and consider if it fits your need. If you feel the kit lens is still soft after stopping down...you should consider investigating if it has focus prob or is there any prob with your cam setting etc. If still confused, you can post your photo here and let us see...probably it's alr sharp but you are expecting more? tt's said, you need to look at problems with more perspective too...

People are trying to explain to you that there are differences beside the "zoom" between different focal lengths, eg perspective. Guest you don't really understand this perspective.

Yes, you can move closer to the object with a 50mm lens to have it the same size on the frame as compare to a 100mm. However, the background will look further on a 50mm than on a 100mm. This is what we meant by perspective.

See below pic with both lamp posts of about same size but background is further for the one on the left taken at 17mm compare to the right taken at 50mm

It's not even a DSLR. It's a medium format camera, a digital one.

Come to think of it, the sharpest lens is not the real physical lens that mount on to camera. It is actually yr eyes that will know what is sharp or unsharp, complicated technology involved.

If your current lens is the 18-135 or 15-85, then it is already sharp enough for use.
If otherwise, you can consider one of the L lenses.

A 50mm or 100mm prime is not going to be ideal as a walk around lens as you can only control what is in your picture by moving around. Plus your perspective is limited.

In addition, a 50mm lens has a FOV of about 80mm while the 100mm has a FOV of 160mm.
Both not ideal for walk about.

    My suggestion stands.
Get the lens checked by Canon if you think it is not sharp.
Regrettably, my other advice to you is to revisit your basics.
