Thumbs up Phil Askey's D70 review is out!

Read it here

Based on test done by him, D70 is an excellent camera!

I suppose we don't really need him to confirm that?

The sales volume, the number of backorders and the D70 owners are better testimonies!

Very good review indeed.

Phil also covered the "Green to Magenta cast at high shutter speed" issue !

Phil is uncharacteristically slow.... usually, he's quite fast with reviews, especially a camera as good as the D70. The "cons" are really minor compared to the "pros". His review supported the general consensus that Nikon has produced a winner Great for all camera users

300D didn't fare too badly in the comparison tests

Think he wanted more inputs on the various image quality issues before finalizing. As expected, the usual taiwan election chaos of fraud, bribery etc resulted in the various forums ....... BTW, there is a interesting read abt this phenomenon in the luminious landscape. Think Ken Rockwell's seven levels of photography applies here too.

He has said previously that Nikon does not send him a camera for review and that he has to get the commercial release of the camera. In UK, the camera came out about 2+ weeks ago. So a thorough review is about there...

If you open the D2H review and compare the ISO noise side by side to the D70, I find the D70 noise more pleasant from ISO200-1600. TOo bad the D70 doesn't have ISO 3200. Anyone have the same opinion?

This puts to rest a lot of issues like D700 lousy noise performance (perhaps can even be viewed as better quality noise!), colour shift at high shutters, moire, etc....

My god!! Look at all the insults and flak Phil's been getting from the 300D forum on dpreview! I really think this is really uncalled for. Pretty sad.

this sort of things always happened. one of the guys said that it happened previously "when Nikon was taking a beating from the D60/D10, 1D/1DS, he was being accused of the same thing. But it was from the Nikon fanatics."

I think that the D70 is a very good Camera and I did hesitate between selling my 300D equipment (only had one 50mm lens extra) and invest in Nikon, or invest in new lenses for the 300D.

The results from Phil's review confirm that the D70 body is a very good camera, and has more value for money than the 300D.

My main concern for the 70D was and remains the moire and the maze that can affect the pictures.
For most pictures it will be limited to small areas and will not affect quality.
I am however worried than on some picture the affected area will be large, and will require at least some specific post treatment (a thing I am trying to move away from); with the maze effect, moire post treatment will not be enough (probably a FW update will fix the jpeg).

Today I find myself liking the portrait orientation framing, and the lack of vertical grip on the D70 might be of concern.

Anyway congrats to Nikon for producing such a great camera; I hope it will push Canon to produce a better body.

I think maybe a patch upgrade will be able to solve the Moire problems..

D70 is great value for money, no question, no need to wait for Phil. Already known that from the first day I hold the camera unlike the feeling when I hold the 300D (sorry Canon fans). Wait for the next generation of non pro DSLR to be release (say Canon will have something better than D70 and maybe 6 mths after Nikon will have a D80 etc) all at consumer price. This cycle will probably never end and is all the better for consumer like us. In time to come you will get D2 at D70 price !!. We can all keep the D70 as a second body or loan it out free for newbies who want to have a taste of SLR photography.

Although the 300D has a very cheap look, I stronly disagree that it feels cheap.

As for waiting for Phil's review, it was important for me to know exactly when the moire and maze effect appear: there have been pictures on the forums, but exact measurement were missing, as well as comparisons.
After Phil's review I know that the maze problems is common but affects only the jpeg (where a patch could be used), but also that the moire is quite common at higher frequencies (anti aliasing filter, no patch can go around that).

I have no regrets on having kept my 300D and bought a new lens instead of getting the D70.
Another issue I have about D70 is the dust that seems to appear almost out of the box; and although it can be removed with the Nikon software, it is yet an extra step in processing.

I'd love the 300D noise to be more "grain" like the D70.
I'd love the 300D to have a black body
I'd love the 300D to be un-crippled.

May be I should have both, to have the best of both worlds

Good consideration but once you invest on the lens it becomes very costly to switch. Anyway it may be better to consider the system in total rather than the camera body alone. There will always be better camera body to upgrade to.

Come to think of it, everything from cars forums to cameras, yeah!

Well, at least on dpreview, such traffic generates hits, which feeds itself from the sponsors, at least partly or indirectly. In CS, trolling = wasted bandwidth.
