I happened to pass by the place at about 12.30pm. The guys are still setting up the event. I didn't bring my cam so gotta give it a miss. Thanks for sharing the photos and editing it so that we get a quick view of the models and clothes.

Was there a lot of photographers there? What time-slot did you take?

My previous attempt at event photography was the Hang Ten Woman Of The Year. Truly enjoyed it.

Hi pianodancer. I was there at 3 on Sat and again at 1 on Sun (thinking that it would feature different set of clothes but they turned out to be more or less the same). Not many photographers were spotted on Sat though, but could see abt 4-5 prominent ones (holding SLR/DSLRs with big lenses) on Sunday.

There are more free fashion shows at various venues this coming weekend. See : http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthrea...686#post600686

Zodnm has been most kind to have listed the free ones for our references. So, there are still opportunities for you to get out with your gear and have great fun shooting!

Default Walk with Fashion@Millenia

Here are snaps of some models appearing at the fashion show at Millenia Walk last evening (8/4). Not only the contingent of the models were huge (abt 30 if I heard correctly from the MCee), but also saw a large congregation of photographers there (15-20)....Wow! For those who missed and want to catch it, there will be more shows this weekend at 2 & 4pm.

Hi ymun,

I was there too. As I do not have experience in fashion photography at all, was quite lost and can't decide whether to use flash. In the end, I went flashness.

Did you use flash ?

I have post some photo at http://community.webshots.com/user/chrisleng/1

Please comments.

Thanks :-)

Hi Chris. Thks for sharing.

Really envy you for being able to take relatively clean photos without flash at the show. As I'm using a consumer-type camera, I cannot afford to boost the ISO to compensate for the lighting condition there as that would mean terrible noise in my images. I have no choice but to use flash (internal as I've yet to acquire an external one). Even then, I would recommend using some flash at the show. Apart from allowing you to get cleaner images with lower ISO, more importantly, the flash, at appropriate level, would help soften the harsh shadows casted on some models due to the less-than-optimal positioning of the lightings at the show. For instance, I think a little flash would be helpful to your photos: 0799, 0814, 0784a. Another reason for using flash at fashion shows and portraits, which I learnt from a posting here, is that flash would add a spark to the eyes of the subject and make it appear more alive. It's also important to learn the temperament of your camera and flash. In my case, I would normally compensate my flash by -0.3 so that the highlights are not blown out while giving subtle fill to the shadows. You may want to experiment using your flash in future shows to get a hang of your camera-flash combinations and see if the flash does indeed give you the result that you want.

Like you, I'm not experienced in fashion photography, nor in any other type for that matter . In fact, I'm just a casual phototaker who would just snap, snap. snap for fun (without thinking), esp since every take with the digital camera is free. I like your series of the Millenia show, esp the close-ups of the models (I've read somewhere in this forum that fashion photography, as it's name implies, emphasise on clothes rather than models. But I do like to take close-ups of the models myself for their pretty facial features), even though I would think that flash may help you in confronting the difficult lighting condition there and making some of your shots better.

Looking forward to see more of your photos in future. Cheers!

Hi Chris,

Hope you can make it for the events and enjoy yourself. I will not be able to make it (except for the 5pm Bugis one maybe) Therefore, would really be grateful if you can share some of your photos of the events at this forum or at your homepage.

Btw, the "Weekend Fashion Highlights" shd be held at Millenia Walk. The Suntec event is called "Rev into Style@Suntec"; not too sure of the timing though. You may want to hop by Suntec to check.

Hi ymun,

According to http://www.singaporefashionfestival.com under the calendar section, "Rev into Style@Suntec" is held at Millenia Walk on 11/4 (Sun) 8pm.

Anyway, these three places are within walking distance, hope I could finish work in time for the shooting. Who knows, may be we might be standing next to each others without knowing it. lol.

By the way, "Triumph , the Art of seduction" will be held at Tent on 15/4 (Thu). Hmmmm , hope they allow photography too. Hee Hee

Hi Nova19.

There will be a big public fashion event this Sat at 7pm at Ngee Ann City (S'pore Designers/Labels Show - Street Finale). Bet there will be a huge turnout of photographers. So grab your camera along and join the party and have fun if you can

Hi Chris. Thks very much for sharing your very nice pics of the two events yesterday. I missed both yesterday. Do you have good fun? Did you find flash helpful at the two events? I must say the choice of using flash, or its intensity level, very much depends on the lighting conditions (e.g. whether the lighting condition is bright and uniform), the lighting mood that you want to achieve for your subject, and of course other considerations like the usable ISO and shutter-aperture combination of the camera under the existing light for clean sharp images. You have got a very capable camera which offers good flexibility, so keep on experimenting and have fun.

I notice that you have tilted your subject (dunno of there's any jargon for this type of composition) in some shots of yesterday's event. I personally found some tilted a bit too much. For myself, I would be gentler on the tilt, if applied, especially for the full body (head to toe) shots. This is of course more of personal taste and style, pls don't take it seriously as being good or bad, right or wrong.

I will probably attend only the event on Sat, as the other 3 are ticketed ones. If I'm not wrong, the Loreal show is by invitation only, the Triumph show costs $10 with a minimum purchase of $80 worth of Triumph regular-priced products, and the Julien show costs $300 with dinner.

Hope to see you around on Sat

Hi ymun,

Thanks again for your comments and encouragement. Yes, I did enjoy it a lot. Keep running both sides to attend all the 4 time slots. Too bad I can't manage to rush for the one at Orchard and Jurong point. Hee Hee

Well, actually I took that opportunity to experiment with the flash.

Since that the weekday events are not free, I will go for the Sat one.

As for the “tilted” composition, which I have tried, I must thank the photographer who stands beside me. He keeps moving his elbow into my shooting area that I have to tilt to avoid him. Well, at least I learn some new composition because of his inconsideration attitude. Ha Ha Ha

I look forward to the Sat event and hope to see you there too.
