L is Canon's designation for their top range lenses, which are generally well made with good optics. Sigma and Tamron have similar designations for their top lenses too (EX and SP respectively).

Only a few of the recent L lenses are marketed as dust sealed and splash resistant. (i don't think any of them are 'water sealed', as in water immersible.)

The average price of the L's are higher, starting from around 1k, but there are non-L's that cost more than the L's, like the 65MPE macro and the 45mm and 90mm tilt shift lenses. Most of the L's are under 3k, i believe.

Here's a link to Canon USA lens page explaining the "L" designation:

http://www.usa.canon.com/html/eflens...y/lseries.html

ST1100 is right. Not all L lenses are dust/weather sealed. Only some of the latest ones are.

Nikkor! Any Nikkor is a top lens!

But seriously, Nikon has no designation for its top lenses. However, there are several technologies available:

AF-S : Silent Wave Motor, similar to Canon's USM and Sigma's HSM
VR : Vibration Reduction, similar to Image Stabiliser, Optical Stabiliser, Anti-Shake.
ED : Extra Low Dispersion, similar to UD, SLD, LD, etc.
IF : Internal Focusing, when focusing does not cause the lens to lengthen/shorten.
RF : Rear Focusing, where focusing is achieved by moving the rearmost element(s).
DC : Defocus Control, where you can control the bokeh of the lens.
PC : Perspective Control, to correct perspective distortion.

And are Nikkor lenses dust-proof/water-sealed too?
