Default Nikon D2x and DX00 SLRs Predictions in PHOTOi

I got the April copy of PHOTOi magazine yesterday and came across the following statement on Page 10 ("PMA 2004 show" article > "The trends" box):

"Nikon match Canon with a full frame camera offering the D2X for well heelded amateurs and pros and the DX00 for the serious ameteurs."

I have read many rumours on D2X over the past few months but never heard of the DX00...wondering how likely is it?

Erm you sure its not a April Fool's joke? Think I saw something similiar to this on the Nikonians website, which turned out to be a April Fool's joke. If not a joke, then perhaps its noteworthy it's under the 'trends' section and not a real announcement by Nikon...

Nikon reveals future digital SLR plans
By The Popular Photography & Imaging Staff
October 2003

In the October 2003 issue, in the "SLR" column, we published a report from the weekly Japanese Photo Trade Express quoting Makoto Kimura, president of Nikon Imaging Company, Japan, as saying future Nikon digital SLRs would have full-35mm-sized sensors. Herbert Keppler, who is currently in Japan, spoke directly with Mr. Komura, who denied making this statement.

In a meeting in Tokyo, Mr. Komura told Mr. Keppler that Nikon will use the smaller sensor in future digital SLR cameras at all levels. "Nikon will continue to study full-size sensors," he said, "but it is for study only." Nikon will not use a 35mm-sized sensor, Mr. Komura said, contrary to published reports.
I do hope this is true.. Sorry to burst the bubble..

Not really, I believe they will continue to produce DX size cameras for the less "well-heeled".

From the PMA report, it seems the D2X, whether FF or DX, will be for the "well-heeled", meaning super loaded pros and amateurs! It is not surprising it they price it at the Kodak 14n level.

Actually it is not difficult to imagine a future where Nikon has FF and DX cameras existing side-by-side. At it is right now, this is the current situation, where FF film cameras and DX digital cameras do exist side and complement each other.

If there is a market for FF DSLRs I don't see any reason whey Nikon shouldn't go ahead and produce one. If all those loaded pros and amateurs are rushing to buy 1Ds's from Charlie company BECAUSE it is full-frame, then Nikon will certainly come up with an answer for them.

erm, justarius is right. it's a "trends" section (as in trend spotting), not fact. there's no announcement from Nikon at all.

God when will the BullS**T rumour mill ever stop.

For Pete's sake Nikon have on at least 2 occasions categorically stated in public that there will be NO FULL FRAME DSLRs, now or in the forseeable future.

According to two of my sources (not BS rumor mills online) Nikon are likely to announce the D2x either late in Q2 or in Q3 this year. It may be on sale in the UK before years end. It's not expected in Australia before early 2005.
