CHELSEA BID 70M FOR TORRES - REPORTS

Chelsea have launched a dramatic and potentially record-breaking 70m offer for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, according to reports.

The Daily Mail, splashing the bombshell across its backpage, claims that 'preliminary discussions have already taken place, with the outcome of those meetings positive enough to convince Roman Abramovich that he will beat his big-spending rivals at Eastlands to the 26-year-old Spaniard.'

Manchester City, whose manager, Roberto Mancini, publicly confirmed his interest in signing Torres two weeks ago, had previously been thought favourites to sign Torres were he to leave Anfield. Fleet Street continues to maintain that the Spaniard is considering his future at the club despite signing a new deal last year.

Concern about Torres' intentions have been further complicated by claims in the past week that the striker may have lost faith in Rafa Benitez.

Following the suggestion made by The Daily Mirror that 'Torres is no longer an admirer of Benitez', The Sun reports this morning that 'Torres' relationship with the manager has cooled to such an extent there is now more chance of him staying if Benitez goes.'

LIVERPOOL FANS WON'T LIKE READING THIS

Fernando Torres is 'considering his Anfield future', according to The Daily Mirror.

The paper claims that the striker has either lost faith in Liverpool or is close to losing it.

'The Spanish international has been unhappy for some time with what he sees as a lack of investment in the team, and he wants to know that the proposed takeover will happen soon, and bring in the necessary funds for rebuilding,' it reports.

'Manchester City and Chelsea have also made discreet enquiries that have not yet been rebuffed by the player's advisors as he waits for reassurance from the Anfield board.'

And here's a claim we didn't see coming:

'Sources close to Torres suggest that he is no longer an admirer of Rafa Benitez, and would be more likely to give Liverpool another 12 months should the manager leave, to give them time to get new owners and new investment in place. The same applies to Steven Gerrard, who would be more likely to commit if there is a change of management.'

COULD COLE MOVE UP TO ANFIELD?

Better news, for a while, for Liverpool fans in the Daily Mail:

'Liverpool want England and Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole to spearhead an Anfield revival.'

With his contract negotiations at Chelsea seemingly stuck at a deadlock, Cole is likely to be available for a free transfer this summer. The absence of a fee will make him an especially attractive propostion to the cash-strapped Liverpool.

'Even if Benitez leaves, the club will look to sign at least two more English players over the next month as they pursue a policy of signing more homegrown players to prepare for new UEFA guidelines.

'He would not command a transfer fee but is looking for around 6.2million a year in wages - 120,000 a week.'

    Hmm. Still pretty expensive then.

And there's a second catch to this story:

'A move to Liverpool is believed to interest Cole as a next-best alternative to staying at Chelsea. But that plan was originally smoothed by the idea of the Anfield club qualifying for the Champions League - which they have not - and being in a position to build this summer...That could open the door for Tottenham and Manchester City to make rival offers for Cole.'

Liverpool face July start to Europa League campaign
    By Soccernet staff

Liverpool will face an extended season next term with their Europa League campaign kicking off on July 29, with a return leg seven days later, unless they manage to overtake Aston Villa on the final day of the season.

England have three representatives in the competition, but only two of those enter in the final qualifying round. The third entrant, usually the winner of the Carling Cup which for the second season in a row will pass down to seventh place in the Premier League, must enter in an earlier round.

Fulham, who will next week face Atletico Madrid in their first ever European final, began their campaign this term with an away trip to Lithuanian side FK Vetra on July 30. The Cottagers won both legs 3-0 to comfortably pass into the final Play-off Round where they overcame Russian minnows FK Amkar Perm..............

Fulham are believed to be the best-placed team not guaranteed European football, so if they lose in Hamburg they would be the Premier League's representative. If they win the Europa League, Fulham would go direct to the Group Stage as holders and the Fair Play place would pass to Burnley.

However, Fair Play winners enter the Europa League at the very start - on July 1. Liverpool had to do this in the 2005-06 Champions League season when they were handed a concessional place as holders, after finishing fifth in the Premier League.

The Fair Play Award could be seen as a poisioned chalice, given Europa League qualifying begins in the middle of the World Cup.

    Hicks pays 'terrible price'

Tom Hicks believes he has paid a 'terrible price' during his co-ownership of Liverpool but has implied that it could take two years to sell the club.

The American businessman and co-owner George Gillett are ready to listen to offers for the Reds after appointing new chairman Martin Broughton to help find buyers.

But when announcing plans to sell, Hicks also indicated that he believed the club have tripled in value under his control to an asking price of effectively 800million.

This suggested the Texan will not be willing to accept a cut-price, quick conclusion to his turbulent time at Anfield, which began in February 2007, and he has now reinforced that fact.

"From discussions we've had over the last two years, there are plenty of those people [potential investors in Liverpool] out there," Hicks said in The Times. "We've owned it three years. We won't own it for five.

"I can still be a fan. But I've paid a terrible price. I'm 64 years old. I don't want that any more.

"Jerry Jones [the Dallas Cowboys owner] is a good friend of mine, but his life and his family's life is the Dallas Cowboys. Mark Cuban, the Dallas Mavericks are his life. This isn't my life."
