Hi guys,
I am thinking of upgrading from a Sony P&S to DSLR soon... (within the next few days)....I am current looking at D70 and 300D... The main reason for me to upgrade are:- 1. The P&S focusing is too slow...can't catch my kids when they are playing around.... 2. Bad in low light condition.. I usually take pictures of my kids playing in-door...can't use a high ISO setting on P&S the noise is just not acceptable.. Heard both Pros and cons about both camera....and these are some of the things that affect me: 1. 300D - Focusing seem to be a problem... but does it impact me.. as I said...usually I shot in-doors with the subject moving (kids running etc.) 2. D70 - Noise - Seem to hear that D70 produce more noise than 300D and it has a higher min ISO setting (ISO 200).... I really hate noise. ![]() 3. D70 - Moire effects....but does it affect me... based on my requirements.. I am new to SLR and dun have any lens commitment yet... Let's said that I am ok with the price range of with both camera... based on my requirements... which camera do u think is more suitable for me.. thanks bbchia |

you won't have much problems with focussing or noise with either cameras. both are fast and relatively noise-free.

I think both camera are good. Each have the own "beauty" in it. Choose wisely between both of them, you still have no regret.

Whichever camera you choose, I'll advise you to put aside some money for an external flash or fast prime lenses or if you can afford it, both. Decent indoor shots of fast moving kids without either is very difficult.
Since your kids are no longer babies, I'll recommend an external flash more. It's more bang for the bucks. The fast primes are useful for natural lighting shots, but you'll still have to crank up your ISO and deal with noise if you intend to capture those fast movement candid shots in the comparatively dimly lit typical household lighting. Happy choosing and shooting! Francis |

Here's a basic (weak) attempt at trying on giving out advise:-
1) D70 startups faster (300D takes ard 3 - 5 sec -- sorry, never time) to start up. So are you the type who leave the camera on and if a moment comes along -- startup and compose and shoot? If so, get D70. Of course, I think spec for spec, D70 is expected to come out tops most of the time... (wrt to speed) However, if you would intentionally leave ur cam on, and then constantly try to frame and shoot, yes, the startup time won't matter much... unless you like to on/off/on/off/on/off... urm, yea... Yes, that's all these for those nitpickers. 2) moire -- hmm, there's a lot of hoohaa over moire, I suppose it's a matter of waiting for the fix to come up, or ignoring it entirely? Would like to highlight if your kids clothes tends to have those very fine lines... urm, unless u find moire effect very songst... else urm, wait for fix before committing. 3) 300D is cheaper on the wallet, and would make great economic sense if you just wanna shoot your kids. Get a nice n fast lens. D70 would provide more economic sense if you get bitten by the shutter bug. (Tho' I'm not too sure if Nikon lens costs more or not. There's always 3rd party like Sigma/Tamron/Tokina/etc). 4) Get your kids to perfect the art of posing. I think as long as the cam meets your requirement, doesn't matter if it's Ni*/Ca*/*.*. It don't even have to be DSLR all the time. Better take ya pics fast -- kids grow up quickly. ![]() |
