Photo of the week suggestion thread

Despite the overwhelming interest, nothing seems to be done after a year of appeal. I think the admins are either too bz or not interested to hold the contest. (A BUY BUY BUY forum? ) Maybe members who are interested to hold such contest can offer feedbacks/suggestions. Personally I feel it is good way to encourage photographers and at the same time to showcase good works in this forum.

On a site that is mostly equipment orientated, what do you expect?

My personal point of view (I don't speak on behalf of the moderators):

1. Judging will be difficult and controversial.

2. Jealousy will very likely surface and lead to acrimony and bitterness.

3. It's very likely that only a few contributors will regularly "win" the POTW. This gets tiresome after a while (not me, hor - people like Mega and so on).

4. There's always photo.net if you like to be rated.

5. etc etc.

I wouldn't mind if it is always the same contributors winning it. These only show they are really good and can set a standard for others to achieve. As for the controversial judging, I think it is inevitable. It will be good to setup a POTW for various sub-forums instead of an overall one.

Why need a contest to showcase the works?

First of all, let me just apologise for the delay in all these, we've been caught up in so many things that I must admit, this completely slipped me.

I think that is a very unfair statement . While ClubSNAP undeniably has alot of equipment discussions going on, there is also quite a bit of non-equipment photo discussions as well as photo postings with comments that have graduated from the 1 or 2 liners which we see so often when we first started.

In the past, we had a POTW and then it was changed to POTM (Photo Of The Month) which was subsequently discontinued due to several factors. Some of these were:
- too difficult to coordinate as the Mods had to constantly vote on the photos each week (as it was in the beginning) and then each month (when it was changed to POTM)
- we did not want to see ClubSNAP becoming another photosig of sorts where many pple were basically stroking their own egos
- we did not want to keep seeing photos from the same pple as participation in the past POTW/POTMs were quite lacking

There were more reasons, but I think most ppl can see what I mean.

While I will not promise an immediate revival to the POTW/POTM, I will initiate a discussion with the other Admins and Mods to see how can we proceed and arrange something workable. Bear in mind, its not just the level of participation that matters.

I believe the statement is more than fair and most certainly accurate. Post a question on camera and another asking comments on your shot, chances are you get more responses with the former. This is pretty obvious for all to see. Funny you should mentione that we have graduated from 1 liners because last time I checked, that's still dominating.

If the photo submit for POTW is to less, I think it is useless to have it
It might lower the quality of POTW
Some of us might not dare to show our photos, just like me pai seh, photo not nice mah

Well, I disagree, and I do not consider a site that has substantial amounts of both equipment and non-equipment photo related discussions as "mostly equipment oriented". There are plenty of other sites that fit into this category which have nowhere near the amount of posted photos and non-equipment related discussions.

And if you think the current types of comments on photos are bad, you should really take a look at those when ClubSNAP first started. At the very least, there are now many posters who give suggestions on improvements as well as reasons as to why they did not like what they saw (if they didn't like it). This is most apparent in the Portraits and Poses sub-forums. Perhaps I should have said "graduating" instead of "graduated", as I did not mean we are completely out of that phase. Afterall, there are plenty of newbies who visit and post here.

I joined Clubsnap a few days after it started so I know where it came from and frankly, not much changes where commentary on images are concern. There may be a lot of images posted on this site but how many actually got the attention they deserve? Not many if you ask me.

CS not only have substantial amount of equipment discussion, it is DOMINATED by equipment talk. One good example to look at will be this tread. For the past 21 hours, things only got picked up now. I've come across threads on equipment which was started almost the same time that goes for 3 pages. Have you seen a image posted for commentary commanding that kind of attention, maybe but rarely.

Face it, CS is pretty much an equipment site and seeing the way things are going, it will remain that way. Not that there's anything wrong though just that if I needed opinions on my images, CS would not be top on the list.

Does non-equipment photo discussion include the Kopitiam? At 60k+ posts, it's the second largest forum after... Buy & Sell.

Incidentally the 3rd largest forum in terms of posts is General, Reviews, Tech Talk, with Consumers Corner / Services and the Canon forums coming in 4th and 5th respectively.

Since I'm doing the numbers, the number of posts from the Photo Galleries make up about 20% of the total number of posts in CS.

Agreed on the lack of attention. This is something that is difficult to change unless there are more pple who start to post detailed comments. But I definitely do not agree on the part where you say are are not much changes on the commentary on images. If you are referrring to the majority (51 out of 100 is still considered majority) of the comments, perhaps, but certainly NOT a straight "not much changes".

Again, I object on your usage of "DOMINATED". Perhaps it is in your definition, but I do not believe that sites "DOMINATED" by equipment discussions will have so many posts with photos (non-equipment related photos mind you) and some with requests for comments.

My thoughts...
I absolutely like to see something like photo.net in CS.
But what CS become what it is today (equipment site??) is an evolution over time from it's participation. CS also not intended for photographer only, it's for everybody who are interested in information on photography be it skills or gear.

Admin just run the site (a well manage one), don pressure them.

Do a poll to see how many interested ? If the number justify, just a simple rating system instead of POTW/POTM (photo.net again), the public is the judge. No prize, no competition. I believe it can still general greater interest in photography.

I'm not really concern about how my views are being perceived. I just state them. As I see it, CS is a sequal to HWZ and it will stay that way. Probably CS has grown too big to be steered into another path. Sorry to say this but the numbers just don't add up for me to consider CS to be image making orientated. I'm sure its obvious enough for you to see.

You see more images posted here than when it first started because the population has grown. Same for equipment talk, you can't deny that it has also grown substantially. In this case, any increment in number of images posted does not reveal that CS is moving away from tech talk. Should this change happen it should be gauged from the ratio between the type of postings rather than sheer individual numbers.

I won't be discussing anything with you offline or via pm because I don't see nay need for it. Would prefer to stay open with what I think.

I'm in no way pressuring the admin or pushing for a change. Just reflecting my thoughts on what I see about the situation on the lack of attention to threads like this one.

The Admin (Simon, Edmund, Jason and Darren) are all really busy people hence they sometimes miss threads like this one. Half the time they're out of the country so it's really difficult for them. And they do plenty of work behind the scenes. The rest of us can't really do much about it ultimately as CS is their project.
