Suspicious behavior... Let me just say it was closed to just slipping namecards into peoples' hand and walking away. He didn't just avoid me but the uniformed staff as well but he didn't realize that he had slipped his card to my client's boss and he wasn't happy abt it.

I definitely wouldn't call this networking. Networking is when you make a proper inroduction, talk and socialize. This was akin to those people standing on a busy street and pushing flyers in front of others. I just don't think what the guy did was in good taste.
    OMG, that's very clear now...

Agree. Photographer who is running business should learn the ethnic besides the photography skill indeed.

When the heat is up, competition getting fierce, people out of their wit, will commit anything even to the risk of committing crime, breaking the law, ethics is the last thing on their mind or never exist in the first place.

even when i'm on a shoot, on the job, i dun go out farming out my name card unless i'm asked for it. i just feel it's disrespectful to my clients. the clients are the ones who are paying for my services and i should have their interest at heart first because to me during those hours of engagement i represent my clients.

one good thing has come out of this. immediately after the event that night the client reaffirmed their commitment to continue working with me in front of the staff and big boss. while i know they use other photog occasionally i know i shoot for them often enough. to top it all off, the following day i had another shoot with the same client and they told me that it was okay for me to increase my rates for them.

haha it was ok to increase the price. Think your client is a big company and dont really care about the payment. My boss once asked for a 5K price and the amount just flew across my clients mind and immediately say " ohh ok " then he continue talking about other things.

Damn if its 5K for my wedding i would think 30 or 50 times man...

These are the rippers or aka hungry ghost of the trade. They are more concern about, hardware, price undercutting, etc.

They did not realise that, to be a successful photographer or whatever trade one is in....good rapport, character, mannerism, personal charisma, quality of works, punctuality in work and delivery, creativity, innovative, artistic sense, team player are some of the essential which cannot be rip off.

i think it boils down to having a trusting and working relationship with clients who u've worked with over the years.

speaking abt code of conduct and ethics, what do you guys think of this - if you are the official photog and you hire a back up/second photog and this guy starts distributing his name cards (whether asked or marketing himself) at the event?

A saleman working for company A selling product "A". During he employment under company A he try to set up a company B selling product "A" also.

While visiting customers and representing company A he try to give out he own name card, intro himself as company B spokeman selling product "A".

    What you think of this?

For me, I won't feel so because we don't have conflict of interest. But maybe for some designers or writers, they will feel so.

So come to think about it, others might not see him as cheap or unprofessional indeed.

    Just my 2 cents...
it depends, if he is there as a guest , and is just networking as part of the event, then no one can say anything.

if he is there as a guest, and tries to pretend that he is associated with the official photographer, then that is horrible.

if he is a GATECRASHER, then that is plain desperate. it sends the wrong signal to everyone when the truth is out, because it just means that he needs business, cannot get business, and needs to resort to such means to get work. if anything he should learn that this is negative more than positive.

then make sure that when you give the photographs and he is significantly lousier you make it clear which photos are taken by you.

if he is better then better keep quiet.

If its possible to do without the backup; fire him on the spot. If cannot, fire him after the show's over and never to engage him again. Make sure your peers know about it too.

i think firing on the spot will just reflect a lack of confidence on your part, i would not do it.

I don't think it reflects a lack of confidence, but rather a zero tolerance policy toward 'traitors', sending an immediate clear message across. But then again hv to look at the situation at that point in time with discretion.

i asked this question because i feel i own the relationship to the client and the second photog is hired by me not the client i.e. he is answerable to me not to the client.

i would expect a certain code of conduct from him to respect this relationship. any leads from the event or queries should be referred back to me. in no way, should he represent himself.
