Default An interesting thing happened while shooting today...

Had an event shoot with a long time client today and half way through this young chap (I later found out he's 22) came in and started farming out business cards to as many people as he could while I suspect, avoiding me. The way he was doing it was rather dubious and suspect, interrupting the guest and my client at the event.

I later confirmed my suspicions. He was handing out his card advertising himself as a photographer. This was a small event in a somewhat up-market area and some of the guest who were already familiar with me were asking about my so-called "colleague". Needless to say I disassociated myself from that individual and it raised a couple of eyebrows among the guest.

So, to the guy from Jeffri Angkasa Photography, please go learn some ethics and not ride on the coattails of others. What you did only ended up making yourself look bad and unprofessional. You made yourself look cheap in an up-market environment.

Honestly, I'm not worried about this person cutting into my business but the lack of ethics is something else altogether. I hope for the sake of the industry it is not a sign of things to come.

it has happened to me before. one guy was distributing his photography namecard during my events.

i just told my client what he was doing and immediately he told security to escort him out of the property not before giving him a stern warning that he was causing disturbance to a private event.

so be cool, be professional and act fast.

Find out his user id (if he has 1 here) ban his ID.... Cheapo stealing business. Shame on him. No ethics at all, hope his camera screws up on him during his next assignment. See who would want to employ him then.
I have expensive camera and big lenses but don't know how to use..... Sound familar???

what he did during the event is not professional, just keep your comments on the act.

even a pro will not give such comments on fellow photographers, is degrading the professionalism of self.

btw, nothing wrong with using blogspot, many big name photographers also doing that.

Some people in an effort to market themselves, simply fail to reflect on the foolishness of their actions. That's very ignorant. And I like the idea of getting security to escort them to the exit.

Sorry, maybe I have different point of view.

Imagine this: If another Mr.A is distributing his business card (other than photographer, say... interior designer or writer etc.), will you feel rather annoyed and think he "ended up making himself look bad and unprofessional, as well as making himself look cheap in an up-market environment." ?

For me, I won't feel so because we don't have conflict of interest. But maybe for some designers or writers, they will feel so.

So come to think about it, others might not see him as cheap or unprofessional indeed.

    Just my 2 cents...

But that guy is a photographer leh...

    Professional:
Is ok let says I was invited to a company event by the host and distibuting my B.Card even my rival company is there. This is a healthy competition.

    Unprofessional:
Invited or not i start distributing my B.Card and intentionally or unintentionally "associated" myself with a reputable company.

I can accept that if he is a invited guest and doing so on the basic that he is the guest of the host and introducing himself properly.

My guess is that guy was not invited to the event and the host and guest think that this guy is one of the event photographer assistant thus have not raise any issue with him.

The fact that he avoid the photographer...i do not have to state it so clear.

I think you miss the point here...
bowwow is a official photographer of the event.
this person is taking advantage of bowwow, the guests mistaken this photographer is endorsed by bowwow, and associate him with bowwow. It is not an acceptable behavior.

    Just adding to the discusion.

Did that guy actually tell people that he is the official photographer and he works with you? Did he carry his gears around shooting pple too?

Assuming that guy is actually invited as a guest to this event. He is doing the usual networking, i.e exchanging namecards, making small talks. If the other guests mistaken him as the official photographer just because he identify himself as a photographer, is it his fault?

Well one thing is for sure. That fella is getting heaps of bad publicity. In this competitive market of photography, one has to be creative and sensible in networking. Even if he's desperate for business contacts, he should not have done it at the expense of failing to respect the officially appointed photographer; and most of all, self respect.

According to TS, the guy was behaving suspiciously (like as tho he was afraid to be seen by the official photographer)? But the crucial point here is whether is he an invited guest.

Actually we do not know whether that guy actually associated himself with bowwow. Perhaps this guy was just doing usual networking as Melvin said below?

I agree with snowspeeder that to "investigate" () whether he's a guest or not. But to judge a person to "behave suspiciously" might be a bit subjective. Maybe he just doesn't like to be photographed (some PG don't like to appeared in photos) in that event, so he has to try his way to avoid the PG.

But if he really had the mindset to be associated with you as main PG of the event by giving out his namecards... then he's pretty naive.

right, let me clarify a few things.

He wasn't invited and he definitely didn't fit the profile of guests invited.

Suspicious behavior... Let me just say it was closed to just slipping namecards into peoples' hand and walking away. He didn't just avoid me but the uniformed staff as well but he didn't realize that he had slipped his card to my client's boss and he wasn't happy abt it.

I definitely wouldn't call this networking. Networking is when you make a proper inroduction, talk and socialize. This was akin to those people standing on a busy street and pushing flyers in front of others. I just don't think what the guy did was in good taste.

Oic...so what we have is a gate crasher who covertly distributes his biz cards in a non-sincere cowardly fashion.
