    computer - digital

    photography - digital

    since c = d and p = d, thus c = p

That explains why your background is brighter than what I got

btw, do you use Star 6 filter?

not necessary to use a star 6 filter
using a smaller aperature while increasing exposure time will decrease the number of 'spikes'
    anyone can confirm that?

The spikes are caused by the number of blades in your aperature.
When your aperature is stopped down, it's not a complete circle.
i.e. 6 blades will look like hexagon.
    thus the spikes...

Yup, the number of spikes are the same as the number of blades the lens have. Actually that shot the background is also rather dark, just cant get a good expo w/o blowing out the street lamps. So i the end I had to pull some curves and level to get a lookable shot lor.
