No lens hood does not improve contrast of picture.

Main purpose of lens hood is to protect your front of your lens and also to eliminate some issues of flare.

To answer your question, I do not think that spending the extra money to buy lens hood for your kit lens and 50mm prime would be worth it since the hood would be quite small. << my own view.

Lens hood is used to prevent the sun or other light source from shining into your lens and thus will prevent lens flare or glare. for myself, I used a lens hood for this purpose and also for protecting my lens when Im walking in crowded places.

Yea, there is no harm asking question. Even basic ones can be enlightening to some other people.
Regarding the question; do not get a hood for the 50mm f1.8. It is not built to last .. therefore with a hood it would cause more damage when a knock is substained. Moreover, it works best under low light condition. Usually people don't use it under conditions where stray-light is rampant.

Newbie here too.......does a 3rd party lens hood works? I thought for lens hood, they need to calculate some angle stuff and make a optimize hood to prevent sunlight from entering? Will 3rd party lens hood work as good as a real lens hood?

Pardon my ignorance but is there such a big price difference between the original hood and a 3rd party one? Why don't check with NSC about the prices of the original hood if you think you need one. You won't have to worry about optimizing your hood or vignetting issues.

    Cheers

actually, if there is flare, then using a lens hood would improve the contrast. this is because flaring lowers contrast mar.

but only if there is flare.

Someone on CS did a test indoors with the light source out of the picture (i.e. normal ceiling light) and found that a lens hood increased contrast significantly. I would get it for the 18-55 if I were you. I don't think the 50mm needs a hood since the front lens element is slightly recessed so it is already shielded from stray light.

There will always be people who will buy just to show off. We'll let them be. Sifu always tell me to move on and continue to take good photos and enjoy.

Bro...it is only a piece of plastic cup. Why pay more? 3rd party hood also can.

when using a 3rd party lens hood, make sure you get the similar one as the one originally prescribed by the manufacturer, cos if you get the wrong one, you will get vignetting problems at the wide angle end ... 18-55 lens (for canon) is a very shallow hood. that's all i can say.

    Only good for protection.

    Cheers!

Some say will, especially in situations where flare is not that apparent.

Here's are two links which might be useful.

I don't know about the Canon 50 1.8, but for the Nikon 50 1.8 the front element is quite a bit recessed into the lens and adding a lens hood wouldn't cut much more flare than the design already does.

I used a hood for my 50 1.8 anyways because I don't use a lens caps and it's more convenient.

As for a hood on your 18-55... I reckon it will be difficult to find a 3rd party one that works well.
