And you know where the pick pockets come from? Romania.... I have never been there but I know that since Romania joined the EU they can not send them back anymore after they get caught...

It is a funny mix of countries I must say, how did you come up with that route?

Anyway, just keep an eye everywhere for people that to conveniently happen to be in your area. If you think they are, then they are probably up to no good...

In Italy I like Sienna a lot, we were planning to travel around more but ended up staying there... Florence in Italy is also a must, but I did skip it as I stayed to long in Sienna. As we loved Italy so much we said we'll go Florence the next time. I thought that Venice was very disappointing.

    Have a nice trip.

You mean Rome or Romania? Two totally different place

For London, if you experienced a good weather (When I was there last June 1st day very good, followed by 2 raining days, and the final day when I leave only back to good weather), try to make use of the long day time (Sun rise around 4am, sun set around 9.30pm) to explore around. Big ben, london eye, ... If you got time take day trips out of London. I went to Stonehenge and never regret for that.

for me, I always not carry too much cash with me, or put in in different place (waist pouch, pocket, etc...)

It's been many years since I was in Italy; then, the best way to travel from Venice to Florence was by train. Alternatively, you could consider internal budget flights, if there are any.

There's many things to do in each of the places you're going. Perhaps some idea of what you and your family like would help. No point recommending museums if you'll never step into one.

For the places you mentioned i only went to london and switzerland.
Since you are back pack I presume you are on free and easy.

    Some useful tips for you
    1. Nearby train stations usually there are tourist info counter. Get useful booklets / maps foc from there.
    2. Yes consider what your family member like
    3. Certain town / area provide a travel card / welcome card at a certain cost, where you can unlimited entrance on museum / certain attraction, or provide discount, or unlimited public transport.

That's pretty touch-and-go - 4 countries in 17 days, not forgetting that you have to minus 2 for travelling, which effectively leaves you with 15.

I've also said somewhere else before - if you're going with your loved ones, then bring as light as you can. Don't forget that you're going on holiday, not on a photographic trip. You can bring a tripod but I doubt people will have 15 days of patience for you to set up a tripod all the time.

And you're going backpacking with your family? Meaning, staying cheap and eating cheap and traveling cheap? You have to make sure they are fine with it right at first.

15 days (17-2 days air travel) for 4 countries is really touch and go. 坐马看花. Why not just focus on a region, say the 2-3 alpine countries of Austria/Switzerland/Italy. There're special Eurail pass that limit to adjacent countries and you dont spend too much time commuting. You work out a time table and will note that more than half your time will be spent in trains! EG by Swiss train from Zurich to Interlaken is almost 4 hours. There are many places to visit by confining to selected countries. Good to know a bit of the history of the places you'll be visiting. That'll make the trip informational and more meaningful. Not many people heard of the Habsburg Empire, and the event that led to WW I.

Why don't stay in Italy for the full 15 days! There is so much to see.. Otherwise you just spend your holiday on the train/bus instead.

You can go to Rome, Sienna, Pisa, Bologne, Venice, Milan and Napels. And the food is great! Best in Europe...

Just these suggested places to visit would knock off more than 10 days. Swiss travel another 3-5 days. How much time left for London? Can take UK and London as a separate trip in the future.

Visit the link below and check out the travel time between some Swiss and Italian cities (yes include Italian cities on this Swiss Rail website). You'll understand what we're trying to say. Travel half a day to relocate, have remaining half of the day to sight-see... the next day relocate...the next day... very tiring man. And the places you visited will remain just blur (or blurred) mental images.

Venice to FLorence can take the train.

My one time experience from Milan to Venice was memorable. There are different types of trains. Some stop at many towns while others stop at certain major towns (More like express). Express trains have different class and booking ahead can gurantee seating. The ones with no seats assigned may be crowded (and slightly cheaper). You may end up seating along the corridor (Yup there are some pull down seats on the train walls but not many) or standing in the corridor like the MRT in Singapore.
