Yes, it certainly does depend on your job scope. I'm a university student in Computer Engineering (at a crazy rigorous California school). They force us to use PCs a lot due to donations from companies that don't know better and only have one version of their software, etc. etc. But Virtual PC does fairly well, and Windows truly is a heinous piece of software, not to mention that most manufacturers use crappy components for building PCs.
I have a job as a hardware engineer this summer (paid internship in Silicon Valley) and I know I'll be able to use Macs on the job there.
Kind of helps that I'll be working at Apple Computers
So, though I voted "no" on the laptop, I might just purchase on this summer
