Default Filter for Summicron

Hi,

Based on the what I gathered from the shops, its a little difficult to get coloured filters for Leica Summicron. Does anyone know when I can get a decently priced orange filter (39 mm) for my 50 mm Summicron or is there any cheaper solution other than buying an original Leica filter.

Thanks for your help.

New Leica colour filters are not available here. You can find used ones but those shops ask for collector price, so not worth the $$$ (BTW, original Leica filters are not multi-coated.)

If you don't mind waiting, you can order B+W MRC colour filters from CP (not cheap, but of excellent quality). Or, if you don't mind the brand, Hoya does produce 39mm colour filters (not MC also) at reasonable price. You can order them from Ruby.

I have asked CP for Hoya filters 39mm, but it takes them 3 months to order. The other option was to look for used filters, but can't really find anything in the shops. Not sure what other avenues can I pursue.

Perhaps the cheapest way is to buy more standard sized filters and couple it with a step down ring. this is merely a thought from the top of my head as i don't use filters on any of my leica lenses.

You can order Hoya filters from Ruby or go see Nelson@Konota. (if you are talking about B+W, then yes, to order from CP, you've got to wait for months.)

Used filters, there are tons of them at eBay. (ya, I know not everyone buys stuff from eBay like I do.) Check this out nonetheless: Leica filters at eBay

Tell me what color are you looking for and what is the price that you are willing to pay, I may be able to help. (BTW, a normal UV leica filter costs around S$80 and so if you are hoping to find an original Leica color filter for $20, then I shall pass.)

Hi,

Thanks for responding. Have looked at the website and I don't think I want to buy an original leica filter.

The filter I am looking for is an filter orange and/or a yellow green filter. RC also do not have stock for them and will probably take some time to order.

Are the step down rings readily available. The problem with step down ring is that it hinder the hood of the lens. Not sure if there are any noticeable effects as a result of that.

I don't mind paying a little bit more, but I'm reluctant to go to ebay and pay for originals with freight charges. Prefer to be a user and not a collector.

E39 step-up/down rings are notoriously hard to find (the only one that I know E39-46 costs about US$30+shipping!!) and you are right, you can't use it with standard leica hood anymore.. I don't think it's a good idea

I still think you should just order a Hoya one from Ruby (ask Mr. Leong, nice guy). There is a local Hoya agent. You should get it within a week if not days.

cheers.

Thanks, I guess I'll check with Ruby to see if stocks are available.

Sorry, even Ruby also don have stock for both Hoya and B&W.

Any other suggestions short of buying original Leica filters?

Ya he brings in the heliopan filters and he does have the 39 mm size. He has color filters but not sure if he has them in 39 mm. Call and ask. No harm.

Hi,

Just to update for those who are interested, Nelson of Konota is able to get hold of 39 mm filters.

Just for record, Nelson at Konota even managed to get me the almost extinct 38mm filters and rubber hood, which most shops don't even bother to help! And in 1 day!!
