There's no present. There's only the immediate future and the recent past.

I have full confidence with Toyota but my next car would probably not be one.

This is from channel news asia, "Hyundai Motor is recalling 47,000 of its new Sonata sedans to fix faulty door latches. "

I think you will be hard pressed to find any large manufacturers that haven't had any recalls.

Yes, I still have faith in the Toyota brand and quality.

I still consider Toyota to be the no. 1 brand for family cars.

Most of my relatives own and drive Toyotas with no problems whatsoever.

I don't mind getting a Toyota car, but given the current crop of Toyota models available, I will not buy any of them. Other makes are much more tempting

I'd rather get a Honda Civic or a Mazda 3.

Let's see. Widespread Canon 1D Mk III autofocus issues. 7D with ghosting images. 5D II with blackspots around specular highlights. Nikon D1, D1h, D1x, D2h, D2x with backfocusing issues at close focus. 70-200 VR AF goes dead. CL-L2 soft case base weakness.

Those are just things that come to mind off the top of my head. Some with recalls, some without.

I don't see many Canon and Nikon users contemplating never again buying another one of their cameras

Because a camera doesn't kills you like how a car suddenly accelerates for no apparent reason or when the airbag explodes upon deployment would?

I thought someone might bring up that point

It's a fair point, but how many people have actually died as a result of this?

And also, if cameras were actually potentially life threatening, how many more widespread recalls do you think we would have seen from Canon, Nikon, Sony, et al.?

i don't know, i never heard of any toyota owner complaining in singapore that his car accelerate suddenly.

anyways, no big deal, sometimes it's just your luck.

doesn't have to be a toyota to have a car fault.

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated,

"If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating:

If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part):

    1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash........
    Twice a day.

    2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

    3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

    4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

    5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.

    6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.

    7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.

    8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

    9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

    10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

I have heard this one before and the GM reply, but I can't help but think it's one of those urban myths.

At any rate that comment above is a little bit cheeky if true, cause we're talking about $200 copies of Windows 7... anyone think Win 7 is worth eight cars?

It really depends on the way Toyota recovers from this issue. This Japanese car manufacturer's problem (Toyota, Honda, Hyundai) saga is a great lesson and can be used as a case study on many aspects:

    1. Service Recovery (technical and relationship) in the automobile industries
    2. Collaborative production systems with integrated supply chain and quality controls (JIT, TQM vs 6 Sigma vs hybrid)
    3. Corporate governance and responsibilities (Accountability and societal marketing)
    4. Public communications (essence of culture, target audiences and approach)
    5. Litigation for businesses in home as well as cross border businesses.
    6. Business strategy (Profit vs market share approach, cost vs value)

Just my 2 cents. Nevermind, I'm just babbling.

I would think that there has never been a better time to buy a Toyota. Imagine what they would do to gain confidence back again.
