what's the diff betwen macro and close up shot?

macro is a term reserved for the specific area of photography where we shoot pics that result in magnification of either 1:1 (life size) or an even more magnified ratio. usually applies to small objects(jewellery, insects, flowers..) incidentally, nikon calls it "micro" .
"close-up"..is just an english phrase ^_^. it can be loosely used to describe macro photography...or if say u r usign a 500mm telephoto lens to shoot a fullframe shot of a soccerplayer in the field..that's also a form of close-up shot.
