    well, maybe my knowledge is more on AMD cause i remember AM2 socket can't take DDR3 and AM3 might not be able to take DDR2

    Its directly related to AMD's integrated memory controller. AM2 socket type processor supports DDR2 while AM3 socket type processor supports DDR2 and DDR3.

    In short, as long as the motherboard states that it supports the processor, chances are that the RAM used with the system will also be supported.

    ok, got tht clear. actually tht was wat i meant when i ans diver-hloc with this sentence "as long as your new cpu chip can use on ur mobo then y not.", refering more to the socket

    For him, he can consider Q8400 or Q9400 though. Perhaps Xeon too.
