Thread: If you were born in the 60s in Singapore...

was born in the 70s.....my memories of 'old' Singapore, among many others, are.....

    - having a chocolate milkshake at the snack bar after catching a movie at capitol cinema
    - the numerous small shops selling aquarium fish and indian flower garlands as you walk from
    cathay cinema to selegie
    - bringing my malaysian relatives to shop at ck tang, orchard road
    - following my dad to cathay photo store, and also to joo ann foh to process his film
    - shopping at fitzpatrick's (holland village) was a pretty normal thing to do for locals, unlike
now, where going to holland v feels like entering some other country
    - satay club at the esplanade; my parents always brought me there for a meal when i was in
primary school, years later, i would bring my gf there when i was in sec 4....

and i never did understand the govt's/URA's decision to tear down the national theatre in river valley, the van kleef aquarium and the hill street hawker centre!

Apologies to al....... was too busy at work to get these scanned

In the old days, flying was just too expensive for many people..... a popular mode of transportation between Singapore and Hong Kong was by ship..... a whole 5 days from port to port..... pics courtesy of my dad during his HK University days..... This was wayyyy before NUS or Singapore University days

No fancy Changi Airport viewing gallery...... everyone just lined up at the pier to wave off friends and relatives ala Titanic style

This giveaway print was tiny because in those days telephoto lens were German and very expensive .... therefore what they did was crop the negative and enlarge resulting in outputs like this, grain and all .... about a 4cm x 4cm print in this case..... a friend of his took this pic of my dad' (the one with the camera) and his friends onboard ship going back to school in HK.

He really enjoyed these trips back home...... 5 days of fun, adventure and skirt-chasing each way.

Image of Tana Lot in Bali circa late 60's or early 70's ..... dad said that the Bali of old was magical and surreal ....no tourists but idealists and those in the know knew about Bali then....

We were back at Tana Lot a couple of years back and he was just shocked that it's immediate surrounds were all shops and what-not. He said in those days... they used to ride their bicycles there (about an hour or two through the villages) and the place was serene and the atmosphere was revered and very respectful..... no paths no stairs ..... just bare rocks and the locals had to dance around the waves to cross to the temple

He loved going there with his artist friends..... by ship first to Surabaya or Msalang and then eastwards by land to Bali after another short schooner ferry from Java

    No wonder lah!

Then you must remember the 2 or 3 storey building along Geylang Serai that sold Murtubaks and other Indian food? It was a random building by itself along a field IIRC. Seems that very few people remember that place ...

Dad's graduating class photo circa 1950's ..... I must say.... they dressed sharp in those days and from what I hear, dressing and personal grooming was a must everyday when you went to class up until the day you graduated

For a 50+ year old print..... alot of these photos seem to be really surviving the passage of time despite being kept in less than ideal conditions

hey guys..... please make an effort to clean off the dust of your parents or grandparents' old photos and post your own images from 70's or earlier here

I am still halfway thru my dad's archives and will post more over the next few weeks.

    A good photo's 45% you, 45% practice & 10% equipment. A bad photo share the same ratio.

The fact that we always like to reflect back on the 'good old days' and most times we were looking at era of our time. Do we really hope that life was the same or we actually appreciate today's advancement?

I am from the early 50 and while many childhood momoeries are still fresh, I personally think the modern convenient are better. However, we should still keep the old charms and not to have too many glass buildings. All these massive constructions are really necessary?
