Default If you were born in the 60s in Singapore...

Those were the good old days.....

Swimming in tongkang infested and sewage filled Singapore River after school

    Where farms were REAL farms

Where Sungei Road was a REAL thieves' market

When a roti prata cost 5 cents a piece

When it took a good hour to drive from Queenstown to Katong.... without traffic

When it was normal for a rickshaw to send us to school

When Redhill was an area controlled by the gangs

    When policemen still wore shorts

It was always a treat visiting Robinsons (before the fire)/ Tang's/Tay Ban Guan

When there was only ONE Katong Laksa

    ah! too many good memories

Please...... if you have images from the 60s and 70s to share...... post them up

    Please Add on.........

    In the 70's...
-- On saturdays, I walk back from school to home save $....about 25 minutes walk.
-- Pay only 10 cents (student fare) to take CSS bus.
-- most family unable to afford a decent camera, colour printing was considered very expensive then.

There still exist police wearing short pants in their patrol, however, not in Singapore, and riding bicycle too.

I think there was a thread featuring a very, very old film footage of the OLD Singapore.

The opening titles featured a structure that looked very much like the SG Flyer.

    My memories were of:

    • Cinema tickets at 50 cents at Ocean cinema at Katong, Republic Cinema at Marine Parade...
    • Mee soup at 40 cents a bowl...
    • Bus tickets at 10 cents for students. And the bus conductor, after punching your ticket, would shout 'Aaaiiirrhh' at the top of his voice so that the bus driver in front knows everybody is done and he can start driving off...
    • And yes, Robinsons before the famous fire burnt it down...
    • And the forever crowded, sweltering, dirty hawker stalls beside the fences along Singapore River, behind the current UOB Centre, Bank of China and next to Fullerton Hotel...
    • The old East Coast sea side even long before the current ECP was built. In those days, the whole stretch of Marine Parade was filled-land, and I often run across the big field up a hill just before the Lagoon Hawker Centre to fly kites. No highway. No nothing. Just a couple of young children with our kites... Was very sad when the government tore down my hill...

... I am not old. Just reminiscent of times of old...
