High end compact camera vs entry DSLR

Which one is actually better? One of my friends told me that a good compact can win a entry dslr, currently siding with getting a Pentax K-X.

Depends on how picky you are with pictures and how much effort you are willing to do with post-processing. A DSLR is designed to give you the most fexibility, and it's designed to give you the ability to do the post-processing *on your own*. A high-end compact will do a lot of the processing for you, so you get acceptable shots straight off the camera. But a compact will not match a DSLR for details, sharpness, dynamic range, ISO noise and shooting speed.

So, if you're lazy, Compact. If you are willing to put in some effort, DSLR.

an entry level DSLR is always better than a high end compact camera....and since ur talking abt pentax K-X....I strongly believes it the best camera anyone who is picking up this photography hobby can get for that kinda money...at least this is what i think...

a good compact camera should deliver better edge-to-edge sharpness as compared to an entry-level DSLR with typical kit lens. Other than that some compact cameras offer better video mode over DSLRs.

It really depends on how you see it; a K-x when paired with decent glass shall outperform any compact cams out there

any dslr will will high end compact based on sensor size n af servo speed.. N this 2 is critical is u want to have more croppin n land more shots..

I feel that the only advantage compact has over dslr is digital macro right out of the box. DOF is also higher for compact...but that does not imply any advantage or disadvantage

Compact - 1. You don't have to invest in additional lenses 2. It's lighter

High end compacts... hmmm. depends on the definition leh.

EP1 also high end compact.
GF1 also high end compact.
Leica M9 also high end compact.
The new rumoured mirrorless APS-C sensor camera from Sony will also be termed a compact.

So how to compare, like that?

depends you want to use for what.

Compacts are good if want to sneak it into concerts and performances especially those with lenses that are F/2 or better. If you go for walkabouts/street photography, people are more open and security guards dont usually care so much.

In a sense, thats why a huge number of street shooters like rangefinders though the design of the Olympus EP1 + Olympus 14-54mm f/2.8-3.5 Zuiko is a very good alternative.

I am almost sure you will be end up with both. I had a compact film camera then moved to SLR. Later I had a Panasonic digital compact camera, then again I moved on with a DSLR. So I have at least 4 cameras now...

Those you can pns right out of the box, but I'm currently siding with K-X because I already have a Canon Ixus 95 serving me well.

Besides, I do video recording in church so I have a slight idea of what I'm playing with, I like to do all the adjusting to take good shots!

some High end compact looks really good. unless you want shallow depth of field.
EG Leica Dlux4, LeicaX1, Ricoh GR3 , their GXR series, and sigma DP2. Not sure if they have Vid...

One thing you need to consider is if a dslr is what you want.... its weight and size make it less of a carryable cam.

as the above people say, really depends use for what.

if not really interested in the dslr route, there is the Canon G11.

i use the Ricoh GR3 to cover for wide end while my 400D shoots for standard to telephoto primes. This solution saves me the hassle when of bringing wide lenses.
