Thread: TDK 8x8 Internal Dual Format DVD Writer Promotion for IT Show 2004

Dear all, I've got a TDK DVD 4X. wanna share my experience.

It has been working fine so far.
The TDK 4X drive is NOT region free, means u can only switch the region code 5 times, and it'l be locked FOREVER, there's few places to change the code, the software eg InterVideo, which wil change the code on the HARDWARE itself, also somewhere in winXP, which the most stupid move to try to conquer piracy. the TDK 8X is unlikely to be region free.

I scouted www.dvdrhelp.com and HWZ forums for days, called TDK up, there's no firmware to break the region free code, and may NEVER ever be.there're some hacked versions, but I dare not try, for fear of voiding the warranty.

IN the end, I got a software www.regionfree.com, and found the c**** for a friendly version.

Media, do look for those coated with Super Azo, even for VCDs, they're supposed to last longer. DVD 2X can be bought at 15pieces for 25bucks, verbatim, with super Azo, at the shop at SLS which sells the bestbuy vcd...can't rem the name of shop now..damn. it'l take 35mins to burn a full 4.7G disc.

I"m a fan of dvds, esp concerts (rock, jazz etc.), i scout the esplanade lib regularly and 'backup' those dvds.

It has been a worthy investment. bought it for $199.
visit www.dvdrhelp.com its the best ever site for optical drives

by using toast also means not natively supported mah...

can't use it with disk utility unless u use patchburn..

the 4x -/+ TDK DVD writer works fine on mac out of the box without hack though and it's selling for $169 at SLS... might be a better buy for mac users...

what you asking for it's not native support but application-specific support.

oh yeah, trust me... u'll NEED to queue. i bought the 4x DVD writer last yr. the queue stretch half-way down the hall in suntec. their booth was in the middle of the hall and it really stretched half-way across the whole damn hall... it was so popular that the TDK people had to limit 1 set per person! =)

and, its a good buy! i'm using the 4x burner. after some initial hiccups and patching, now it burns flawlessly. as for the region-free software... heehee... u can get the chiong version. or else pay US$50 for it. =O

The last time TDK had a promo at Sitex, the queue was so long, and quite a no. go back empty handed cos the stock ran out! Were told to come back next day when the stock replenish and same thing happen...
In the end, got a LG DVDwriter in SLS instead
Anyway, really good for those heavy data users; I came back from my Tasmania trip with 6+ Gb of raw images and had to backup them onto 10 CDRs ... now they are stored in 2 DVDs

    regards

My experience has been that usually a couple of weeks after the trade show promotion, you can get the same price at SLS. No need to queue.

You obviously don't shoot in RAW. Gigs get eaten up really fast when you shoot in raw. FYI each raw image on the D70 is 5+ MB. I guess the cost in backup media partially offsets the savings in film.

The model is dvd400i and it's a 8x DVD+R and 4x DVD+RW burner, not dual format. Anyway I bought one cos I figured it's good enough for me.. Probably no more stock liao though....
